I echo those sentiments exactly. Floyd has yet to have that fight that we can look back at and say "that made him great". I think if/when he beats Cotto that will put him over the top because everybody feels as though he should fight him. Giving Cotto a legitimate shot of beating him and everything. To dominate Cotto would go a long way in securing his legacy.
i apologize guys for the way i worded it. i agree with you guys about my incorrect saying that you must dig deep to have a career defining fight or that you must dig deep to become an ATG. so my bad. however, i still dont believe floyd has had that career defining fight. a lot of people are arguing my posts the way i wrote it. that's fine. but no one has yet to tell me what his career defining fight was. please let me know.
It's like you read my mind and made this before I.. He hasn't had a career defining fight until he faces Cotto.. Same with Cotto, but unlike Floyd, he takes risks.. Floyd will face the same ole bums for the money instead of the top contenders that could prove that he is the best..
I ask you, why is it that you imply Miguel Cotto, and man who himself has yet to have a "career defining fight", would be the first "career defining fight" of Mayweather's career? I mean, Floyd's done quite a bit in the sport thus far. I think the only reason you think he's yet to have a "career defining fight" is because he defeats his oponents with such ease and so convincingly, it appears as though he's not yet been really challenged when in fact he's fought some of the toughest fighters out there.
Should have been though. How any professional sporting judge could have seen that fight go any way other than Floyd's is beyond me.
In 2005-2007, Hatton was considered Mayweather's career defining opponent. The greatness of the Mayweather-DLH event also made some say that that was the defining moment of Mayweater's career: going up to 154 and beating a mega star. Now it is Cotto. Maybe Mayweather beats Cotto in 2009 and people will say...Mayweather hasn't has a career defining fight, he must fight Andre Berto.
I consider his fight against Corrales to be better by far than both. At that time, Corrales was an unbeaten fighter and huge for the division. That fight was a masterpiece. It was so long ago though, that he doesn't really get credit for it enough.
Mayweather could be 100-0, 46 years old, and people will still not give him his props. Not untill he beats J.C.C. the VIIth
The Corrales fight was a great performance. It's a shame Judah lost to Baldo or that win would've looked a lot better.
What was Sugar Ray Robinson's career defining fight? LaMotta (a guy he had beat 4 times), Basilio (a Welterweight), Fullmer or contender Rocky Graziano? What was Sugar Ray Leonard's career defining fight? The win over Hearns, the uncommon win over Duran or the disputed win over Hagler? They all have arguments. What was Whitaker's career defining fight? The draw against Julio Cesar Chavez? Jose Luis Ramirez or super feeatherweight Azumah Nelson?
The win over a shot Mike Tyson is considered by many the moment that "defined" Lennox Lewis and put his name in history. I think the masterpiece performance of Mayweather against Corrales (a long-time #1 contender, undefeated, a guy that was two-division champ and P4P fighter) can be seen as Mayweather's moment. The knockout over undefeated Ricky Hatton is very close, though.
