Floyd has the most important intangible...

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by LordSharpshire, Mar 6, 2010.

  1. He fights smart. Period. End of story. Floyd has great gifts, no doubt, but, what really sets him apart from the others is that he is always the smarter of the two men in the ring. Nobody outthinks Floyd in the ring. Sadly, because of Floyd's bravado and such, I think the fact that he does fight so smart goes unnoticed. Floyd's smarts are what make him great. Lots of fighters have the physical tools and even tools like mental fortitude, courage, etc. But, to fight smart, the way that he does, is truly something special. This is the big reason why Mosley will not be victorious against him. Mosley, unlike Floyd, does not fight smart. The only way I even see Mosley even being competitive in this fight is if he's balls to the walls and throwing a lot of punches in every round. Can he keep up that type of output for 12 rounds? I don't see it.

As painful as it is, I must agree with every word Lordsharpshire wrote.
Floyd is the perfect model of in the ring professionalism, always in top shape, perfectly prepared. He began working on being a great fighter as a child and hasn't yet stopped improving. The only guys who have a half a chance however, Floyd has avoided .Years ago , Margarito, and recently Williams as well as Paq. The maddening thing is that Floyd would have almost undoubtably won all these fights, but he still shuns the more potentially interesting challenges.

How is he smart? What "smart" things does he do? Boxing cautiously doesn't necessarily make you smart.

I agree with you in most points, but just tell me how he avoided Paul williams and Pac. Margarito is no threat in any way, dont even know why people rate this guy so highly( Bob Arum came up with this Margo being avoided story and some folks sadly fall to tha) I must admit he needs to do more in welterweight division, which i am sure he will from now,:thumbsup

You are either an MMA material or wrestling and have no business to be in boxing if you cant define smart in boxing:bbb

  8. *literally slaps forehead*

  9. A fight against Margo would've looked similar to Floyd-Baldomir. It would've been a shutout. A fight against Pac and Paul would've been competitive no doubt, but I still think Floyd would've found a way to win, because, quite frankly, I just don't think the other two guys are smart enough to beat him.

What does MMA have to do with one's ability to understand and analyse boxing? I happen to be a big boxing fan, have been for many years, I have boxed myself, I am interested in the rich and diverse history...yet I am also an MMA fan. Stop perpetuating an innaccurate stereotype. Being well versed in the art of boxing is not mutually exclusive from being able to appreciate other forms of combat.

Yeah noone is arguing his ring smarts, it's whether his claims match his actual accomplishments. If he gets past Mosley and Pac, I'll be a believer.

I don't think there's much more to add to this statement. Floyd's intelligence I think is accentuated by his opponents all round inability to compete with him physically. For example, JMM. Guy hadn't fought above 135, agrees to come up to 147, Floyd comes in at 149. That's a 14lb weight increment. Translate that across to Mayweather who's not fought above 154. Slap 14lb's on that and we get 168 (hello super middleweight division).

Perhaps JMM is a bad example of his opposition, and I don't mean to slander Floyd so much, but im just giving some reference to the afore boldened quote.

I agree that being smart is the most important intangible but its not the only one. Taylor fights like an idiot and beat an even smarter fighter than Floyd (IMO) twice.

Its the sum of all parts that matters most.
