Floyd is not a natural talent, he is simply someone who worked extremely hard

This thread is ridiculous. It's like saying Usain Bolt isn't naturally talented.

Floyd's level of defense, ring IQ and hand speed are attributes that are beyond being a gym rat.

Some guys will always hit hard, some guys will always be fast. Floyd works hard, sure, but Margarito works his ass off in the gym too, honestly. Just a difference in build, muscle fibers, neuromuscular efficiency, overall coordination. You can't turn someone into a Tysonesque puncher or make them as durable as Chavez. You can't fine tune your reflexes and instincts to be as fine and infallible as floyd's are.

Plus, doing something from the time you are a little kid makes you better at it than picking it up even at 18, EVEN if you spend the same time doing something and perfecting the craft, unless you have a supernatural affinity for it.

I honestly dont think he works harder than any other boxer in training camp, he can just do more impressive stuff while he's there training. (and what exactly is so impressive outside of his sparring and the mittwork? There are better jumpropers (professional jump ropers) and all the physical stuff is what every other boxer in the world does to train. When he hits the guy wearing the bodyshield it doesn't even look as impressive as Hatton going off on the body shield, which is monstrous to look at)

I think Martinez is more of an example of a natural talent since he didn't start boxing until he was in his 20s. But Floyd and most of the top 10 in each weight class are natural talents since a lot of active pros who never reached that level train as hard and for as long.

But natural talent only takes you so far Devon Alexander is more naturally talented than Kotelnik yet many had Kotelnik winning, same goes for Judah who has lost to fighters who didn't have the same level of natural talent.

We all know that, in a more competitive era,Floyd's dad was a contender and two of his uncles were world champions. It's not far out to think the raw physical materials and qualities of personality such as aggression were passed down.

Of course, starting at an early age and from the get-go receiving expert training and advice can't have hurt....

I think the hard work, master teaching from his uncles and father, expert training, and early start FAR outweigh any "natural ability" Mayweather may have.

In fact, it is difficult to actually separate genetics from training, as environmental factors such as diet, training, and even modes of thinking influence genetic potential. For example, a diet with grater protien will cause one identical twin to be larger than another.

"Natural" ability is often used to minimize the hard work and even intelligence of certain types of atheletes. One example from the past was comparisons between Larry Bird, who was considered an intelligent player, and Magic Johnson, who was considered to have "natural" ability. Can one argue that Magic Johnson was not one of the most intelligent basketball players in history, or that Larry Bird was less athletic than most other players in the NBA? Food for thought. Boxing is a thinking man's game, and 9 times out of 10 the more intelligent well prepared fighter wins, not the most "naturally" gifted one.

What a load of nonsense. There's guys who, even if they trained 10 times harder than Floyd, wouldn't be fit to lace his boots. Your post is complete drivel. You're basically saying you don't need talent to succeed in boxing. :patsch

He's got quite a bit of talent, but the work he's put in during training, and the fact that he's always been a gym rat allowed him to refine it into something truly special.

I personally can't stand PBF, but his strength is his skill level, e.g., his defense. There have been other fighters with as good or maybe even better natural talent who were not close to him in what he has learned.

Obviously you need to be among the most talented, at least, to use those skills effectively, but he's not way in the front of the all time field in raw talent.

His father had a lot of skills, but probably less talent. You can see in his fight with Leonard, where eventually SRL's power and speed overcame Sr.'s craftiness.
