having a belt is leverage, but not establishing a US profile can be career suicide in relation to getting big fights. you're essentially asking the networks to buy into a fighter that the broader US market doesn't know. this is also something "boxing fans (should) know for decades", because there is a trail of european fighters who skipped out on big fights because of this : ottke, michaelewski, calzaghe, sturm, steiglitz, eubank, collins (post 94-95) to name a few. people need to stop saying that world class established names fighting on the biggest stage dodged/avoided lesser known fighters when the above example applies.
Yes Floyd is right....I just puked in my mouth a little. But seriously folks, nothing astute true fans of the sport haven't been saying for decades.
ABSOLUTELY but there is no way they will get rid of any, and lose of chance to make one extra dollar today, even though they could make way more in the long run by getting back to the basics and reviving boxing. Maybe like you say Rummy if we can get a name like Mayweather to set boxing straight. I don't like much of what Teddy Atlas says but he's right that the UFC has the right idea with it run by a few guys in one room and a single figurehead. That's the only way we get the big fights constantly and trim all the unnecessary fat.
I think the danger for the alphabets is a break-away league. We've seen it in the past with rugby and cricket, and attempts towards it occasionally in soccer (except their structure has been robust enough to easily fend it off). Someone with a lot of resources could put up a well structured 1 belt Heavyweight league for just that weight class ... and if enough fighters defected to it, the traditional belts could be seen as second rate players for that division. No doubt other divisions could follow. Broadcast and sponsorship rights might be easier to sell in a well structured set up that works for fighters and resonates with fans, in comparison with the ad hoc mess which exists at the moment. As the video shows ... the current situation has descended into farce territory so much so that it's not well positioned to fend off a whole new format. Particularly for heavyweights which have the most mainstream potential.
The only thing that truly matters in boxing is who is the #1 heavyweight on the planet & that is Tyson Fury...and by a long way.
Very enjoyable and funny. Agreed with everything you said, although I don't see the former champs stepping up to do this -- hasn't Iron Mike voiced support for having multiple organizations? I was surprised you even wanted to remove so many divisions -- that's something I support, but I didn't think many others did as well. Anyway, it's really killing the sport -- it turns off new fans and ensures the top fighters can easily avoid each other. Ultimately, it cripples the greatest boxers from achieving the greatest heights. It's just too impossible to become undisputed unless the stars align. Let's be honest, there is no chance of the orgs voluntarily disbanding, merging, or removing belts -- it's all an open cash grab now. My hope is actually that they increase the alphabet organizations even further. More orgs. More belts. More divisions. Why? Because a total collapse is the only thing that will free the sport to rebuild with a more solid foundation. If there are dozens and dozens of alphabelts, they would all become worthless -- it would be largely the same as removing them, and I think that's the most likely way we free ourselves from them. Then hopefully one organization can rise to the top and do things right.
In no way am I trying to devalue all of your other videos but this is the best Rummy's Corner by far! The sport is becoming.. scratch that.. has been a joke for far too long. I'm glad Mayweather and also yourself are speaking out about this. People can say "nothing will change " or "stop tuning in" but we've been doing that for decades already. Time for us fans to speak up and put these orgs on blast every chance we get!
