Not really. He beat a shot Erik Morales. WHo had just lost to a C level fighter in Raheem. Morales no longer viable at the weight.


Pacquiao was even losing to Morales before Morales legs gave way in the second fight.

That was some bad matchmaking. Raheem was a tricky fighter, at a weight Morales had never fought at, and he wouldn't have been too motivated as it was supposed just to be a showcase for the Pacquiao rematch which was pretty much already signed. Sometimes greats don't perform to their optimum when their focus is entirely there. Duran lost some fights like this, came back to give Hagler a great fight. Not saying Morales was right in his prime, I don't think he was shot either - he should've won the lightweight belt after and years later gave Maidana as tough a fight as top fighters today did (Khan, Ortiz). As you said Morales put up a good fight in the rematch. Maybe he was a little weight drained, Pac also had Reyes gloves and fought a smarter, less reckless fight. Still a good win for Pac, good enough to count legitimately as a loss avenged.

Not as cut n dry as that anymore. Top fighters today have more power with cable companies and a deals are negotiated about how much they themselves get from the PPV revenue. Fighters like Pac and Mayweather who are gauranteed 1 million PPVs can hold the cable companies to ransom to get a higher split of the PPV, as without them the companies wouldn't get near as much anywhere else, and with a rival company all too happy to step in and take the fight.

Floyd made between 25-35 mil after taxes if the ppv numbers where were around 1.3 mil sold.

 

Difference is coca cola is only getting 60 seconds of air time, whereas Tecate gets advertisement for the whole event (undercards, arena, main event, etc...) so it is likely that they would invest $10 million.

On top of that there were a lot of hispanics that fought that night (Vargas, Morales, Canelo, Ortiz) which indicates that here were a lot of hispanic fans and ppv buyers. And I am under the impression that Tecate is spanish.

So it very possible that this money was spent when you think about the ROI (return on invesment)
