Speaking purely from a business perspective as I have in this thread, Floyd Mayweather Jr has no business fighting Manny Pacquaio until he has no other 1 million PPV purchase options on the table.

At the moment, Floyd is so good that he can turn near anyone into a 1 million PPV purchase, he is literally in the realm of ODLH in terms of PPV draw now. He is smart enough to reserve his fights and ultimately he's turned himself into the highest paid athlete per "season" ever.

Now anyone disputing the fact that Floyd can earn $40 million a fight and disputing the idea that the money simply isn't there in terms of sponsorship or revenue, look at pro soccer and pro baseball teams who have several athletes being paid $10s and $20s of millions a year and remember baseball teams aren't getting revenue from advertising or PPV, they have a set contract with a TV provider that they receive proceeds from and they receive their live gate sales

The money is huge, once you're talking the numbers Floyd is able to bring. The only person in the world who goes near him is Pacquaio but ultimately, if Pacquaio wants the fight, I honestly believe Floyd needs to feel there is 3-4 million buys or Pacquaio is willing to take a 25% share

We all know Floyd doesn't give a **** if he fights Pacquaio or not, he is smart enough to know that history will remember Pacquaio lost in his youth, lost in his prime and had disputed wins against a fighter that Floyd dominated. He knows 25 years from now, Floyd Mayweather Jr retiring say, 45-0 will beat Manny Pacquaio.

So his legacy is assured, unquestionably. Now it's all about the money and like I've said previously, you can't fault Floyd - he's absolutely 100% upfront about the fact that the only reason he fights now is to make bank because he feels no matter what he does, people will disrespect his achievements

And he's right - even if he fought and beat Pacquaio, you know people are going to bring up the "Pacquaio was the smaller man", "Floyd waited until Pacquaio was past prime" type excuses.

He may as well fight Amir Khan who will happily take $5 million for a chance against Floyd while generating over $5 million himself in UK audience. Floyd knows through the Hatton experience what British fans are worth and that to me is his likely next move.

Why? Amir has mentioned his name AND Amir is a GBP fighter. He doesn't have to **** with Arum which to be honest, no one wants to do - why do you think Arum fighters only tend to face Arum fighters?

We know the PPV did 1.3 million. We know what the price of the PPV was.
We know what the live gate was because it was announced
We know what Ortiz was paid
We can estimate what the other fighters on the undercard were paid
We know what sponsorship for an event like this is worth

The only thing we don't know 100% is the margins for HBO and GBP. But I'd dare say my numbers are closer to reality than anything you'll conjure will be.

Pacquiao has clearly the greater legacy, don't confuse boxing historians with casual fans who would be more impressed with a 45-0 record over opposition beaten.

Pac's early losses are insignificant to his legacy, as Carlos Monzon's were. Infact him being able to come back from those defeats to become the fighter he is and beat the guys he did just adds to the story of his greatness, overcoming adversity is highly regarded in the makeup of an ATG.

He has a loss in his prime, so did pretty much 100% of ATGs who fought the best, like Leonard, Duran. Mayweather sure as hell ain't ranking higher than them. Pac avenged that loss, the only guy to knock out great Erik Morales, twice.

And the Marquez that Mayweather fought is the same Marquez Pac is fighting next, not the 126, 130 still prime versions Pac fought. Forgetting Mayweather cheated him on the scales, what if Pac knocks JMM out early in their fight coming up? That argument is has no merit.

 

Not the gravitas you might think it would have coming from a guy with a Pacquaio avatar.
