I watched the corrales-mayweather fight last night. the first thing that struck me was how corrales almost refused to use his jab and height advantage trying to get power shots in when he should have set them up with the long jab. secondly it was corrales' reaction to his step dad when he threw the towel in after corrales' 5th knockdown, the 4th being from a feather punch indicating he had nothing left. finally the most surprising thinkg for me was the fact that mayweather wanted a fight with naseem hamed at a possible catchweight of 128lbs if naz refused a 130lb fight. i never knew this!! how do you think this would have panned out?? considering this was in 2001 and hamed having lightning reflexes like floyd. altho given the time hamed was about to meet his demise and loose to MAB after leaving brendan ingle and not training correctly and getting sloppy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMILOPERuuQ&feature=related
Hamed would have been outboxed. At that point he was in decline in the sense that he was just looking for one big shot to end things -- he had fallen in love with his power. Hell, even if Hamed was at his best (the form he showed in the Steve Robinson fight) I would still favour Mayweather. You can never count Hamed out, though -- his power was frightening, and it would only take one shot.
Would of been a hell of a match a prime nas was fast and could knock a guy out off the back foot and also had a great chin. Id favour floyd obviously but if nas landed you never know Would of been a great fight
Seen this long ago, Mayweather badly wanted the fight and you can see that Merchant laughed about it and told Floyd straight away that if Hamed watched this fight(with Corrales may God rest his soul) then there's no way he'll sign for it.
Watch George Foreman in the same clip making that infamous ''Nobody is number one until they beat Page'' comment :nut Mayweather was too good defensively for Hamed with a great chin and good recuperative powers to boot - he'd have TKOed Hamed late after schooling him.
mayweather won the WBC title in 98. would have been interesting to see a young and little, in-experienced, little 130lb floyd take on the 98 naseem hamed. bare in mind back then floyd wasnt as good s he is now in terms of his technical ability. even arturo gatti tried to tempt naz up to 130lbs when he was there. naz had plenty of chances wyh did he wait so long to take on the big guns!? especially during his decline.
Mayweather would have put a beating on the Prince. Make sure to watch this interview. R.I.P. Corrales. What a ****ing warrior. Look at the guy pour his heart out in the interview.
Hamed would have knocked Floyd out. Floyd would not know what to do with Hamed. Hamed's style is too wierd, the safety first, overly defensive,Floyd would be forced out of his comfort zone, Floyd would have to be a bit offensive. Floyd's slipping and parrying would not work as well as he is acustomed to, as Hamed's punches come from strange angles. Hamed's reflexes and speed were on par, plus he had a HUGE power advantage. HAMED by KO.
as good as mayweather is. he was a good puncher wiht boxing skills...but his defence was a bit flukey. he was using his reflexes to get out of trouble. floyd came foreward alot and was pretty aggresive in his younger years. a good talent but floyd was not the supreme counterpuncher or defencive artist we see now. im sure a hamed destruction. there nothing i think floyd can do to get hamed of him...boxing and moving wasnt the way to beat hamed. he would judge your distance while your on the outside then walk you into a hook or a cross (from either hand aswell).
Floyd always wants to fight the big names .... he wouldve beat the hell out of Hamed ... who was outboxed by Barrera. I think that after 4 rounds, Floyd wouldve taken over and possibly stopped Hamed. Don't sleep on FLoyd's chin either ... his chin has stood up to some nice shots. And he's never been knocked down ... I don't think that Naz wouldve done enough to turn the fight in his favor. Facing Floyd wouldve caused Hamed to tighten up on his skill set and not fight like he usually does. During the Barrera fight - Hamed thought that he could overwhelm Barrera with his power and not worry about getting outboxed.
He also called out the winner of Casamayor v Freitas ... we all know that if this was 7 or 8 yrs ago that it wouldn't have been a problem for Floyd to call out Cotto or Margarito -- if it helped elevate his status ... he wouldve fought them. I don't think early on in his career before reaching the status he's on now - I think he wouldve fought anyone to improve his standings on a big money fight.
Fitz everything you said is correct except that Floyd has gone down once in his career and that was against Carlos Hernandez.
