Mayweather Explains Antics, Frustration With HBO's 24/7

    By Rick Reeno

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) is not pleased with the recent 24/7 series for his upcoming fight with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs). Unless you've been hiding in a closet, 24/7 is a reality television series, created by HBO, that follows athletes for a period of weeks as they prepare for a major sporting event. Each series of the show is generally three to four episodes, and is narrated by Liev Schreiber.

Mayweather generates the highest television ratings of the 24/7 series. However, Mayweather's fans have openly expressed their frustration with his last 24/7 series, which hyped last September's fight with Victor Ortiz, and there is further disappointment with the ongoing 24/7 series to promote this Saturday's fight with Cotto - taking place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The fans are not alone. Mayweather himself is disappointed with the ongoing 24/7 series. He wants to try new things with the show and provides Bentley Weiner, Director & Coordinating Producer at HBO, with fresh material - but he claims Weiner and the others behind the 24/7 series are more interested in having him rehash the same material.

"I think they show what they want to show. I sit down with 24/7, the lady Bentley of HBO. I sit down with her. I give her an interview for two hours. She tells me that she basically don't like the interview that I gave her, for two hours. I ask her 'what's the matter with the interview?' She says 'that's not what we want. We need animated Floyd. We need wild, over the top, bad language, wild.' That's what she wants. That's what they want. They feel like, that is entertainment. So, I'll give them what they want," Mayweather said.

It infuriates me so much. Didn't like the article really by Rick, I don't think Mayweather fans have expressed concern over the show? And if they had its only because there repeating what Floyd said?

I don't see how this makes him a "******", it basically sounds like HBO is more deserving of derogatory labels like that. I'm no fan of Mayweather, but the criticism he gets is completely ott.

floyd doesn't have the motivation and cotto, although a warrior, isn't a very compelling figure personality wise. that's why 24/7 isn't the best it has been. I personally enjoy this season.

    :deal

I don't care if Floyd dislikes Peta. Controversy and villain role-playing sells, but you can't contrive it out of thin air and market it to the same extent on a regular basis.

24/7 is trying to appeal to the general pop. The general population wants crazy theatrics and antics. They want Floyd calling his dad a ******, flashing bills, being loud, 50 cent and trash talk. Its a reality tv show. They want Jersey shore.

It's hard to know who's to blame for this series which has been one of the worst. Going by Mayweather's comments, I agree with what he's saying. He's probably as sick and tired of playing the villain almost as much as we are watching it. But then from the producer's point of view, I can see why she would find his 2-hour interview useless material. When trying to be normal, Floyd's personality is about as attractive as a bag of rocks.

Quite simply, the Floyd Mayweather story has been played out. Been so since the last Mayweather-Hatton 24-7 episode aired. Everything done since has been ****. When it comes to covering fighters they've already done (May, Pac, Cotto, etc), they really need to come up with a brand new formula to entertain the hardcore fans (which is the least of their concern, to be honest).
