Mayweather had another near shut out on any fair card last night. I had it 10-2. Mayweather has beaten at least 4 other fighters who will end up in the hall of fame, and is approaching 50-0! So why do most historians and some hard core boxing fans have such a hard time giving this guy his due as a fighter. There is little to pick at from a skills, speed, or smarts standpoint.
He is a great fighter for his mediocre times...For example in the 1940s, Mayweather would have had to fight maybe every 6 weeks or so, against the likes of from LW on, an Ike Williams, Beau Jack, Bob Montgomery, Sammy Angott, Willie Joyce ,Johnny Bratton, against welterweights as the immortal Henry Armstrong, Ray Robinson, Kid Gavilan, Tommy Bell, George Sugar Costner, Charley Burley, Sir Fritzie Zivic, etc. These guys had to fight almost monthly to survive and flourish, and elusive as Floyd is he would have lost many times...These guys had no time to heal their aches and pains as Mayweather does...On a footnote I would have loved to see the almost 6ft Welterweight Ray Robinson open up his ferocious volleys on Floyd...Or the KEED Gavilan who would overwhelm Floyd with his constant attack for 15 rounds...Yes Mayweather is a great fighter for his times....You take for example as a boxer only, Willie Pep....Willie coming up fought almost every 3 weeks, against everyone and everywhere, winning everytime...Mayweather would not be undefeated in hundreds of fights...
because we have to see silliness like espn name him the 5th greatest ever, there's gonna be a backlash, he is possibly the best of his generation but didn't want to make millions while proving it.
The Heavyweights generally are exceptions in boxing, in that they have always sucked. Thus when you do get a hint of a special fighter (like Dempsey) it is played up. Also the biggest division (size wise) in most sports normally have a bias towards it. As for the question; I do not think most fans begrudge Lil Floyd the boxer (I have no time for the gimmick). Most recognize he is special and one of the 50 or so finest fighters the sport has seen.
How the hell did Jack Dempsey get in this thread ? Jack Dempsey's "times" has nothing to do with a thread I answered pertaining to Floyd Mayweather. In my judging and answering a thread about Floyd Mayweather, I cannot see a Mayweather fighting every 5 weeks or so against a slew of great LWs and WWs, having great success warding off the bombardments of the great fighters of the 1940s,I mentioned above ,each who had over 100 fights against the cream of the crop...Furthermore Mayweather because of his "style" of defensive 'cuteness", and lack of love of combat would not have been as much a gate attraction...For example a Canelo Alvarez with his few fights would not have been fighting for a title at MSG... As for Jack "target" Dempsey, regardless of your putting down his "mediocre" opposition. not having seen a Fred Fulton, a Carl Morris, a Gunboat Smith, etc fight how can you say they were anymore "mediocre" than some of Louis's opponents or some of Clay/ Ali's opposition.? You truly can't for certain...But I will say that a ferocious prime Dempsey had the proper goods to give any heavyweight who ever lived a very "rough" night in the ring...And it is not my word but the thoughts of the vast boxing fraternity who saw him fight....
mayweather is a legend, he'd win in any era, just not go totally unchallenged. he's on the roy jones career path though, one night he'll turn old in an instant and get ko'd.
Ok, ok, I get it. Jack Dempsey doesn't need to have a division full of talent and he doesn't need to meet his two most dangerous contenders to be an all-time great. All-time great fighters in other divisions were fighting other all-time great fighters in every fight they took part in and didn't fill their careers with hundreds of tune-ups against opponents who had no chance. Besides, the all-time-great opponents they met were at their absolute prime and at their best weight every time. Etc, etc. That was a rhetorical question, I guess.
That is pretty poor, I would expect a world class fighter who is 45-0 in this era to of at least met 30 'title holders'...
Floyd has blazing fast hands and reflexes, is very cautious, minimalist in his offense, paces himself so well, knows how to move just enough to make you reach, or he can duck or roll and counter. He can make you miss and cause you to get frustrated at your inability to land, and he can counter and make you pay. If you fall asleep defensively for a moment, his glove will be in your face and you will barely see it coming. He is perfectly content to eek dull rounds. As long as he is faster than everyone, no one is going to beat him. Like Jack Johnson, his style is a nightmare for anyone.
true say, nothing on the feats of some but he's been fighting above his best weight(not sfw tho, about 135-140 imo) for a while now.
