He's the best fighter in his division and one of the top 15 to 20 fighters in the entire sport. If that's not elite, then what is?

He's one of the best fighters in the world, as is Mayweather. That's what I mean when I refer to the best fighting the best. Neither one of these guys are satisfied with racking up successful defenses against B and C level opposition.

An elite fighter at a certain weight is someone who would at least be very competitive (and would have at least a decent chance of beating) the ATGs that excelled at that weight.

Mayweather is elite. Pacquiao is elite.

Cotto ain't elite at 154lbs. He isn't one of the very best fighters that ever lived that excelled at 154lbs.

So why did Mayweather fight Ortiz then? Was Ortiz one of the best fighters in the world, or even at his weight?

Mayweather is all about making money, not fighting the best. He himself has said that countless times. Nothing wrong with that! After all, this is the point of professional boxing. However, if he had wanted to fight the best, he'd have fought Pacquiao when Pacquiao was ranked above him. It would have made a hell of a lot of money too, but the risk of losing the "0" was too great, I guess.

Cotto, yeah, he's been trying to fight the best (and he has).

This only shows your lack of understanding of the sport, and of the term elite. You may want to pick up a dictionary and also brush up on your boxing knowledge. If you're amongst the best(and top 15 in a sport with so many participants is amongst the best) than you are elite. As far as excelling against ATGs, well obviously that's all a matter of styles. Furthermore, I doubt anyone would say that there isn't one ATG around Cotto's weight class that Cotto couldn't at least be competitive with.

Ortiz was amongst the best fighters in the sport, and ranked number 2 in the division. So yes, he was.

You're again showing off your ignorance. I don't blame you though, many have come to the same faulty conclusion. First off, it takes two to make a fight(Are we going to forget that Arum said he wasn't going to make the fight for May way back in November, or that he said it would have to be done in June when Mayweather would convieniently be in jail?). Second, since when does fighting the best only include one other fight? For the last several years, every guy that Mayweather has fought has been a current world champion. Just about all of his recent opponents were ranked in the top 5 in their divison, and several were ranked in the top 10 p4p. That's what you call fighting the best. Not many fighters are taking on that level of comp every time out.

He has to be a hack!!!

And the OT starter said Cotto hasn't fought anyone in the past 3 years and he feels sorry for him?

Please!!! Who the hell has Floyd fought the past 3 years?
He has only a total of 4 rounds in the past 24 months and he is
talking about going in for the kill.

Please come in for the kill Floyd....couldn't ask for anything more.

Cotto said he is prepared for all that Floyd brings and Floyd better be prepared for what Miguel Cotto brings!!!!

Fu** FLoyd...his ass is going down!!!

Ooops....maybe you better inform Pedro Diaz about this insight!!!

I'm damn tired of hearing all these threads of how long will Cotto last, how badly will he get beat up, how bad will he look and how humiliated he will be...

I think you need to really ask yourselves how will FLoyd boy handle the body attack....how will he handle the lateral techniques that will be employed....the straight rights and lead lefts from Southpaw.
Especially the jab that Floyd will eat early and often.

The more I review this panorama...I'm convinced that Cotto will KO this jive talking *******!!!!!!!

Floyd says this before every fight. He is a big self promoter who rarely goes for the kill.
