"Styles makes fights", probably the most overused cliche in boxing, but the best one to describe the sport. Ultimately you have to do what' works best for you to win the fight. I respect many different styles of boxing/fighting and one of the most effective ways of winning fights does not require great skill or great physical attributes at all (although they could be very helpful). All that's required is a great ability to think and execute. Some of you know I'm a huge Bruce Lee fan, and my all time favorite fight scene of him was a scene in which he did not even throw one punch or kick, but yet won the fight. Enter The Dragon, the boat scene on the way to Hans Island, he talks the bully, named "Parson" into the fishing boat by telling him, his style is "the art of fighting without fighting" but they need more room, so they should take the smaller boat to a small island. Most of you know what happened next, my point is Bruce beat him by out thinking him, movie, yes, but great philosophy. Mayweather's style, post DLH, is not the most fan friendly but the guy is a great thinker and his style post DLH does require a certain taste, especially to a casual fan.
@alexthegreatmc Love that movie. I think sometimes fans forget there is a philosophical side to fighting as well, and this is not a knock on Mayweather, but I swear he's won some fights by imploying "the art of fighting without fighting" which is a beautiful thing.
At the thread starter--you do know FLoyd Mayweather didn't ALWAYS fight like this, right? I'm assuming based on your lengthy essay post that you've been following him in his earlier years including his ACTUAL prime which occurred between the tail end of his SFW reign up until him campaigning up at JWW. By the time he moved up to WW full time in 2006, he changed his style greatly- he became even more defensively oriented and didn't put punch combinations together the way he did between 130-140. You do remember how he fought for 10 years between 1996-2006, right? You trying to tell me that THAT style is an amateurish Olympian style?? He went 27-0 with 20 KO's at 130 lbs, is arguably the greatest fighter ever in that division, and you want to chastise his style? The problem here is, he's been outside of his prime for dam near 10 years now and he's been campaigning in his FOURTH and FIFTH weight classes. A guy who was never a power puncher in the lighter weights shouldn't be expected to be in action pack fights in his 4th and 5th weight classes that he's campaigning in during the LATTER stage of his career. And what exactly is wrong with his more modified style since he moved up to WW in 2006? I don't see ANYONE giving WIllie Pep any **** for his style. You know who Pep is right? He's a guy who never went past 126 lbs, stayed in one division for a VERY long time, was a dominant standout at the weight class, and carried around a 25 % KO percentage with him. No one talks about Pep being boring at all, rather all I hear is incessant adulation that he receives and is universally considered by anyone who knows boxing as a definitive top 10 ATG. If you don't like how FLoyd Mayweather fights guys for the last 10 years, than you must be oh so critical of guys like Packey McFarland, Benny leonard, The old grandmaster Joe Gans, and Sweet Pea. Because he literally fights in THAT manner for the last 10 years now.
You must understand that most of these guys who state such absurdities truly started watching boxing about two years ago...if that... have never bothered to watch the Floyd you speak of and instead choose to speak out of their ass - all the while making themselves sound uneducated in their biased diatribe. Add to that the fact that they have never stepped foot in a ring and you get posts such as the ones from the OP...Floyd was that dude at the lower weights that nobody wanted a piece of...now everyone wants to fight him, only to get embarrassed at the end of the day, but with a huge payday for their efforts. Like you mentioned, if it were so easy...why can't everyone do it? Because it isn't.
A large part of "fighting" is being able to neutralize your opponent. Look, I completely destroyed your argument in one sentence. Carry on.
He's only popular here in the states because he earns so much but I don't know to many Mayweather fans .Most people want to see him lose Not bored the hell out of people. But the minute someone else comes along with an exciting style they will soon forget about Floyd ..
