Sorry Duke. I am just a huge Floyd Mayweather Jr fan and think he would be way too skillfull for Tszyu who i believe Aussies do overrate. Yes he was a good champion for a long time BUT his best win is Zab Judah and he was stopped by Vince Phillips. Cory Spinks has just as many good wins as Tszyu and he was a 2 weight world champ and undisputed welterweight aswell. Cory Spinks cops plenty of flak from boxing fans. By the way i'm noy saying Cory Spinks is greater than Tszyu so don't jump on me please. Imo Tszyu's career does not deserve the ridiculous praise he gets on here. This is just my opinion and i'm sure others will disagree which is fine.:good
Duke your prediction earlier in the thread said you were going with your heart. What does your head say regarding the outcome of Floyd-Tszyu ?
It's interesting because Tszyu's two losses he was pretty much outmuscled. Yet the idea that jumps to mind is that Floyd would outbox Kostya from the outside and that his defense would be too good.... On edit: To clarify, I'm saying that the loss would be the type of loss that Tszyu never experienced in his pro career (so I don't know whether to trust the head....) lol Would have been great to see them together.
KT's biggest asset outside the ring was Bill Mordey. Post Mordey, Tszyu's career become a mixture of failed business and promotion's. Engaging other fighters to sign contracts in order to continue ring activity went to new shallows. Wlad had no idea what he was doing. 5 bouts in his last 5 years destroyed a greater legacy. In Canastota for the HOF, Wharton showed his level of popularity... Like a kid in a candy store, his eyes bulged as Don King entered the room in a 3 piece suit (inclusive of food stains over his tie- classy as a rat with a gold tooth) only to allow Wharton a photo opportunity before moving on to bigger things. A close friend, who photographed the two morons, still laughs when telling the story. Considering Tszyu, at the time, had been performing impressively, King had no idea who Wharton was, nor could he give a ****. A completely different story of Kostya Tszyu's career would have unfolded had he not been conned by Russian counterparts and left Mordey. To rest is to rust.. Injuries added to the impact of poor management, as did the so called Super Stars who had no intentions of ever fighting KT.
What is Wlad Wharton's story. How did he get involved with Tszyu ? What did he do before and after his involvement with Tszyu and boxing ?
In the 90's who were the greatest fighters at 140? Kostya is defintiely among them. You cannot deny he had a really good career, and was a very good fighter.
Definitely disagree with you here. I'm not going to try and go into all the reasons why as I could go on all day, but you can really only judge a guy on the level of competition in his era. If you look at his resume, and the level of opponents over his entire career, you will see the guy has always faced the toughest challenges presented to him. The guy has never ducked anyone in his career (something you can definitely not say about Floyd), and if you listen to Floyd speak in his interviews, you will find many times he mentions that KT was the only guy he respected in the 140 division. Fighting a guy like ex-world champ Juan La Porte and future world champ Sammy Fuentes in your 4th and 6th pro fights are simply unheard of. Don't get me wrong, I admire Floyd's skills more than anyone else, but the guy has a history of ducking his biggest challenges and making lame excuses on why he wouldn't fight them.
OP.. I don't believe there's ever been a better fighter at 140. He's a personal favourite of mine and definately under rated. Fighters too often hop, skip and jump through divisions whilst claiming to be dominant warriors. Kostya was king of the 140 division like no other. DLH had many opportunities to face Tszyu, but jumped into W/W class for the sake of Pernell. F-75 I believe Wharton was nothing more than a car dealer. His Russian ties and unconvincing smooth talk literally cost Tszyu 10's of millions.
Introduced himself to Tszyu after his first pro fight and they became pretty firm friends. Was a used car dealer prior to his involvement with Tszyu, has done F all since. Its pretty simple to figure out that a guy who goes from being a national hero in his homeland, to a relatively unknown fighter in a strange country where he doesn't speak the language and has no family ties or close friends (Tszyu) would take a lot of notice of a fellow countryman who shows him a bit of friendship (Warton). Mordey established Tszyu's profile and fanatic fanbase in this country through his ties with the media and by the time Warton took over all that needed to be done was count the money. IMO
PBF wouldnt drop a round to Tszyu he dropped 4 rounds to Zab Judah and about 5 to Dela Hoya who was well past it.
Now now be fair. Oscar at 154 was a very big ask for little Floyd who lets face it was just a genuine 140 lb fighter at that stage and Oscar at worst would have been in the top 3 at 154 then. He had also just demolished Mayorga at 154 and i'm sure some would have still regarded Oscar as the best at 154. Also Floyd would have been a stone lighter than Oscar come fight night.
Styles make fights, Zab was a fast unpredictable southpaw and De La hoya won those rounds with his Jab using his height and reach. Relevance to Tszyu?? You have a borderline ****** as your avatar so I don't really know why I took the time to reply to you to be honest. Guess I'm just a nice guy.
Kostya always seemed to do well against Faster defensive guys, I always though Kt would have a good shot at winning this fight. But if I had to put money on it i would definently put it on Pretty Boy Floyd.
