For the fighter affectionately known as "Money May", Floyd Mayweather Jr. has once again captured the media's attention with his gambling on sports rather than his in-ring efforts. On Wednesday, Floyd Mayweather Jr. publicly announced via his Twitter page that he bet and won nearly $40,000 dollars on a basketball game. In fact, Floyd even posted a picture of the betting receipt on his FaceBook page.

If that weren't enough, on Friday, Floyd Mayweather Jr. made even more public comments about his gambling as he said that he would have bet $100,000 dollars on the basketball game if he hadn't fallen asleep during the first half. Examiner.com confirmed with a source at ESPN Radio that Mayweather made the following comments on the "Carmen, Juko, and Harry" radio show:

"At first I was going to bet $100,000 on the first half but I happened to be asleep". said the braggadocios Mayweather Jr. "The Atlanta Hawks happened to be in a slump. At this particular time with what's going on in the NBA right now, Derrick Rose is the leading candidate for MVP. I believe in his skills. He's an amazing player. He's one of the players you can bet on."

This isn't the first time Floyd Jr. has publicly announced his gambling habits. Mayweather has bragged numerous times in recent years about dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars on sporting events. However, while Mayweather Jr. is throwing down his money on the NBA, he's also gambling with his career.

We're about 6 weeks shy of it being 1 year since Floyd last fought in the ring. While his public rival Manny Pacquiao is fighting Mayweather's last opponent in Shane Mosley, "Lil' Floyd" is fighting a different battle. Floyd Jr. is fighting the legal system as he tries to avoid going to prison.

Floyd Jr. is actually fighting 3 court cases at once. The most serious is the criminal charges pending against him for his encounter with his baby mama last fall. Mayweather is being charged with multiple felony counts including felony coercion. He's facing up to 34 years in prison. Floyd Jr. is also facin a court case for assaulting a security guard late last year.

And if those weren't enough to keep Floyd Jr. busy, the defamation suit against Floyd Jr. and his family has moved forward this week as a judge ruled in Pacquiao's favor that the Mayweathers indeed defamed Manny in the media when they accused Manny of being on PEDs in late 2009.

With Floyd's legal issues seriously threatening his career, we've now been informed of the rumor that Floyd Jr. is interested in fighting Paul Spadafora this summer. That's right, the man who constantly bashes Pacquiao for his recent fights, is now rumored to fight Paul Spadafora, a boxer who's gained more fame over recent years for his trips to prison and his "body ink" than his victories in the ring.

On Friday, Michael Acri, the promoter for Spadafora, confirmed that representatives of Mayweather Jr. contacted him about a potential fight with "The Pittsburgh Kid". According to

, Acri made the following comments:

"I was approached about the fight. I spoke with Don and a few other people [connected to Mayweather]. Paul is interested in the fight. He's wanted this fight for a very long time. Paul is ready to finish what he started ten years ago. We'll see what happens."

Acri is referring to a sparring session that has made Spadafora into a recent Youtube sensation. You can check out this video in the left column of this article. Paul clearly got the better of Floyd in a sparring session back in 1999.

Spadafora (45-0-1) who arguably hasn't fought a meaningful fight in almost 5 years, boasts an undefeated record and was a former world champion. Unfortunately, his promising career has been derailed several times due to incarcerations. In 2005 he was incarcerated for shooting his girlfriend in the stomach. Paul was paroled in 2006, but was sent back to prison in 2007 for violating said parole.

Spadafora has fought 5 times since his last prison sentence. Oddly enough, it's 1 more time than Floyd Jr. has fought in the same time span. Floyd has fought only 4 times and has retired at least once. For a fighter who claims to be the best of all-time, he surely isn't doing himself any favors by fighting only once a year and taking on opponents who have a clear disadvantage.

Floyd Jr. returned to the ring in 2009 and forced Juan Manuel Marquez to jump up two divisions, put on 10 pounds, and Floyd even came in overweight against the smaller opponent. Then Floyd Jr. fought the older Mosley and was rocked in the early rounds. Now, he's rumored to be taking on a fighter who's not even talked about and most people have never even hear of in Spadafora. The Mayweather critics are all over this rumor as it once again shows the true character of Floyd Jr.

No disrespect to Spadafora, who once had a great career, but the 35 year old is not on the same level as some of the current fighters who are clamoring for a shot at Floyd Jr. like Manny Pacquiao, Sergio Martinez, Timothy Bradley. and Amir Khan just to name a few. Oh yeah, while Floyd is gambling with that money, he's clearly gambling with his career as well.
