Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not the "best" p4p boxer in the world anymore (skills)...

    Firstly..

Don't get me wrong, Mayweather deserves his #1 spot and is currently the rightful king; results against elite opposition should be and is the most important factor in determining who should be at the #1 spot in the P4P rankings, so I'm not saying for one moment that Floyd is undeserving.

    However..

Skills wise, I believe that Mayweather is no longer the best fighter in the world P4P, and this is the crux of this thread.
    ***

He did a good job against Pacquiao, but let's not kid ourselves.

Would we really favour Mayweather over an equivalently sized Ward who is in his early 30s? A fighter the quality of Gonzalez, smack bang in his prime and in his 20s, could make Floyd look old, P4P.

Mayweather is at the top of the Ring P4P rankings and he deserves his spot, but I no longer believe he's "the best" in terms of pure ability to box and win hypothetical match-ups against the current scene. He's almost 40.

Of course he's the p4p best fighter. He's the best fighter across 3 weight classes.

I disagree, he just beat a true ATG, he deserves to be number one.

Eh. I think Mayweather is still better than Wlad P4P.

I'm just making the point that Mayweather is no longer really prime. He's an incredibly talent and has kept himself in great shape and has great longevity, and he's still smart as heck, but the idea that May-Pac was a bout that took place between the two best P4P fighters at the time was an illusion, with neither being quite prime.

The legendary results and fights have yet to vindicate the ability of some other current younger fighters, but they will in time. Mayweather is winding down and isn't the best P4P boxer in the world in terms of "ability". In terms of results, then yes he is. So, he does deserve to be number one, as a lot of what goes into judging it is results against the biggest names and Mayweather has proved himself time and time again over the last few years in terms of quality of opposition and clearness of victory. I'm just saying that he's now quite an old fighter and in terms of pure skill-set there are probably better fighters now. Mayweather has lost a lot of his offence, and some of his speed.

Why would them not being prime have anything to do with whether they were currently P4P 1 & 2? (Pac was probably 3, given his KO by JMM, but still)

You can't discount results. Obviously ability is important, but if the best fighter in the World is fighting guys ranked in the low 50s every month he can't be the P4P no. 1. Just like Andre Ward isn't on the list because he's inactive - you can only prove you're the best by beating the best.

There isn't another person on the P4P top 10 list who has a P4P top 10 win on their CV.

On top of that, there isn't a boxer in the past 20 years who could do to Pacquaio - prime or otherwise - what Mayweather just did to him.

He does deserve that ranking, but skills wise, do you think he's still the best? Mayweather from the Gatti fight probably beats the current Mayweather in spite of being the smaller guy. He had better offence and more speed.

A young prime fighter could make Money look his age.

I will make some clarifications in the opening post.

Best defense in the sport, underrated offense, and best ring IQ.
And backing it up by beating the best around his division. It's no one you can really argue over him.

Yet, he's favorite against anyone he fights, including Golovkin and others... hell, he'd probably be betting line favorite against Kovalev, let alone Golovkin or Ward.

He's the best in terms of earned resume. I personally find him boring to watch, but that's partly because he's so defensively skilled that nothing much seems to happen. But he definitely has the most impressive resume of active fights, Vlad K. being number 2 (unless Hopkins is still active).
