i see an important factor being leonard's tactics, if he spends too long in front he will eat some lead hooks and be slowed, but if he is doing what he does on most of the film(out of range then steps in when he sees an opening) i can't see floyd landing enough to take many rounds. floyd had a decent workrate at lw but i aint sure anyone will have success without top notch power and hiding behind the jab and shoulder against leonard.

In a battle of jabs the longer arms tend to win and Mayweather has significantly longer arms. It's not like Mayweather has a poor jab or poor jab defence and has better speed and reactions. Leonard uses plenty of lateral movement but that doesn't mean he'd control the range or footwork. I'm not sure you can give Leonard ringsmarts over Mayweather, I mean ringsmarts isn't just learnt in the boxing ring, it's learnt from a lifetime of learning, sparring, amateur background and A Class trainers both of which FMJ has in abundance

I would favor Leonard. His ability to position himself paired with his ability to punch on angles would be the perfect way to nullify Mayweathers defense. I would imagin Mayweather fights this on the back foot and Leonard is stalking and scoring effectively all the way to a UD.

I am a big fan of Floyd but Leonard>Floyd at lightweight and Leonard>Floyd P4P.

Floyd has not yet reached the level of a Benny Leonard, Floyd is talented but I would like to see him against the Leonard level but it does not exist today.....I like BL to beat Floyd and show him that level

    Burt,
I agree that it is easy to watch the little avaible footage of Leonard and not realize just how good he was. It should be noted that Lew Tendler, Leonard's oppoent in the footage is himself an all time great lightweight and a southpaw in a time where southpaws were forced to convert to orthodox. Leonard won their rematch in a more convincing fashion.
I also beleive that it is easy to look at Mayweather's personality flaws and forget just how good he is.
It appears that stylistictly both have a lot in common. Both can adjust to anything/anyone.
For those of us who like skills this is a speacal fight.
If you asked me who ranks higher on my all time great list. I would not hesitate to pick Leonard. However if they were to fight, due to his size. Mayweather has a slight edge.

Rip, when i responded to the poster X who said with certainty that "anyone that picks Benny Leonard is because of NOSTALGIA", shows a lack of thought on boxing history...That is such a silly statement, so I responded...He should join a "TODAY BOXING FORUM".
I don't understand the statement that Floyd Mayweather has the SIZE edge over Benny Leonard ? We are talking about both lightweights at 134-35
pounds LW LIMIT. Not an ounce over. So Leonard and Mayweather are equal weights. We are not comparing a Mayweather older and at 147 pounds, against a Benny Leonard who fought so darn often that making 135 pounds was part of his natural weight. And lest we forget ,Benny Leonard was GOOD enough to have licked two alltime great bigger welterweights in Jack Britton and England's greatest fighter, the welterweight Ted Kid Lewis... As a youngster growing up and talking to
old fighters, trainers, and my dad, there was NO fighter held in higher esteem than Benny Leonard. NO ONE. Ray Arcel and others who saw the incomporable Leonard had him as a lightweight, EQUAL to the great WW Ray Robinson...Leonard ,when he would train at Stillman's gym, was so highly revered that all the other boxers would cease what they were doing to watch the MASTER BOXER Benny Leonard spar in the ring.A great boxer
with a trigger brain, and a deadly two handed puncher was the great Benny Leonard who incidentally had FOUR times as many fights as Mayweather
against the VERY BEST lightweights of his time...If experience doesn't count why does College require FOUR years instead of ONE year. ? Cheers.
