The hight and reach advantage wouldn't matter here. Floyd doesn't hit hard enough to even remotely dent the immensely tough Hank Armstrong and he doesn't have the work rate to out work him. The thing with Floyd is he isn't really a fleet of foot type defensive master. He likes to plant his feet and shell up. Armstrong would have no trouble getting to him at all while Floyd would have a lot of trouble landing on Armstrong coming in as he was a master at the Bob and weave. Armstrong would have a hard time landing clean on Floyd inside like everybody else but he'd ultimately out work him and bully him head to chest, and he ain't running out of gas. Stylistically Armstrong is an absolute nightmare for Floyd.
Well this would be interesting. Floyd has fought many good punchers, but never a Frazier type constant swarmer. It would be awesome seeing this matchup go down. I have to favor Mayweather, one of the most brilliant boxers to ever do it. But I could definitely see Armstrongs crazy pace and aggressive style give Floyd something more than he can handle. It's just hard to imagine Mayweather losing a match to anyone, but Armstrong is in a class above all his prior opponents.
Yeah, it's hard to imagine Floyd losing to some people because he's never lost and he's had some ridiculously good performances, but we cant overlook other performances he's had that suggest he's been very beatable on that night. Just a slightly higher calibre of fighter would have got the job done.
The only fighter I'm comfortable imagining Floyd losing to is Robinson. I'm sure there are others who could and would beat him, but if there's a round robin with every fighter in that weight area, Floyd will end up top 5 in results.
He has incredibly efficient footwork. If he needs to stay away from you, he'll find the angle to get out of range. He's really good at making people fail at cutting him off, forcing them to waste their energy. Like Louis, he looks planted, but is ready to spring, leap, step in any direction at all times. He's just a master at not using superfluous movements. Mayweather usually looks fresh after 12 rounds of fighting. Armstrong would make him work extra hard no doubt, but something tells me that prime Floyd can handle the heat. But who knows, maybe Armstrong can close the distance and punch him out. Would be an interesting one for sure.
Had everyone forgotten just how close a past prime de la hoya came to beating Floyd? Armstrong outworks him down the stretch for me.
I am sorry but your statements here are absolutely ridiculous. But this one really stands out. You are obviously a big time Mayweather fan.
Yeah. Floyd's very economical with his footwork but he has shown to have trouble getting away from mobile pressure fighters. He can certainly be pressed. Armstrong is definitely one with the style I feel can beat Floyd.
Not a huge fan, but definitely appreciate his talent and greatness in the sport. I try not to let his out of ring antics effect my perception of his in ring legacy
Montreal Duran would 100% beat Floyd. Theres just no way Floyd could cope with that level of ferocity delivered with immense skill and ring craft. The best of Ray Leonard and Hearns definitely beat Floyd too. Those guys most definitely beat Floyd on their best days. I'd have Pryor beating Floyd. Gavilan beats him too. Ike Williams at lightweight beats Floyd. Not sure about the lack of footage old school guys like Benny Leonard though. Probably.
Everyone respected Floyd's power in the era of big gloves. Men much bigger than Armstrong, namely Canelo. Armstrong's output would drop, just like with everyone who fought Mayweather.
Much harder punchers than Mayweather couldn't dent or slow down Hank and he ain't no stationery target like Canelo. Armstrong would give Floyd fits.
