Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Lorenzo Aragón, July 31st 1996

Whenever this fight is on, it's like whenever Hayley Atwell is in the room. Your focus can only be on the struggle. It's nature.

 

I actually found that fight a genuine joke to score. It's so impossible, such fast work by both and to compute that effectively was a joke (sorting the non-clean to the clean ones).
To me it was as even as it gets. The scorecard didn't give credit to some decent shots that both fighters landed.

 

Lorenzo was able to make it a bit closer in the final round, but that was due to Mayweather employing a more defensive oriented style for the 3rd round. Lots of holding from both men in that final round as well.

I have to remind myself on the scoring rules in Olympic boxing because I only counted 1 body shot they awarded Mayweather a point for- a leaping left hook to the body in the 2nd round. Based off his clean body punching throughout the fight, he should've accrued at least 5 points from his bodywork alone (and that's probably being a bit frugal.)

I honestly didn't think it was that competitive. Floyd was the aggressor in the first 2, landed the much cleaner shots in every round (maybe not the 3rd,) was a much more effective counterpuncher, parried more shots than Aragon and his body work was terrific all fight. I thought it was around a 10 point difference going into the final round.

I can see Aragon winning the last round, but I had Jr. winning by at least 6 points. It's amazing to see the lack of scoring from clean shots. Even Lorenzo nailed him with some clean shots that weren't counted for.

 

I watched that vid and looked for the knockdown at 0.56 of rd2 like stated but i can't see anything.

You can see that Floyd's legs were slightly tangled and that's basically the reason why he ultimately went down. I can't really count that as a true knockdown.

It definitely is not as clear cut as you make it out to be.

 

Okay, let's have a good and civil discussion about this. This is how I see it:

Let's start 2:07 in the 2nd round, we can definitely see that the legs are starting to get tangled, as he was moving in an accelerated pace on the backfoot after a brutal assault on Aragon on the ropes. Hard to keep a good balance when you're moving away in that kind of pace

You can see Aragon throws the lead right hand, Floyd is also throwing a left hook as a response while trying to avoid that right hand shot with the shoulders. I don't see the punch landing flush at all, it seems to me that he fell forward because he missed with the left hook more than the impact of the right hand. You can see that Aragon's right hand bats down Floyd's left and hits the shoulders as well and that's also a factor in why Floyd fell forward.

I think he was shaking his head like he always does (He did it in the pro ranks when he saw that the opponent wasn't doing anything effective). It was more of a fact that he didn't keep a good balance and he was disappointed in his own boxing.
