Floyd got buzzed at the end of the third, legs stiffened when he sat down....at that point and onwards I thought Floyd might get stopped. He won the right but even he doesn't look pleased.

First thing he must do is get his pops out the corner, he can assist on defence on training but damn there is zero instruction coming from the corner at times...Im no expert on boxing but I'm sure he should have q comprehensive idea of what round they're in....end of the 10 snr didn't have a clue what round it was LOOOL

People need to realize that the Associated Press's score card is consistently the best media score card. Again, tonight they are 100% right: 117-110 Floyd.

This was the same fight as Mayweather vs Canelo

I scored the main event for Mayweather, 10-2 rounds, 118-109 points, giving Maidana the 4th and 12th rounds, and including the point deduction against Maidana in the 10th round. I thought only the 8th and 10th rounds were very close and very difficult to score.

The 4th again began Mayweather circling, Maidana stalking. Mayweather landed a jab. With Mayweather against the ropes, Maidana landed a jab and then an overhand right that briefly stunned Mayweather, and Maidana followed up with a multipunch flurry, of which he connected with three lefts to the body and two overhand rights to the head. Mayweather got out, but Maidana went after him, got him back against the ropes, and landed a L body-hard straight R to face-L body-L body combo. Clinch. Maidana again backed up Mayweather, missed two jabs and two overhand rights, got in tight and landed a left to the body, Mayweather landed a good right uppercut, Maidana landed a left to the body. (continued from previous post)

For the first minute of the 7th, the two exchanged several jabs, Mayweather's being a bit sharper, then there was a small exchange ending with a clinch and a quick break, then a few more jabs, then Maidana wildly missed an overhand right and overhand left. A little ring movement, then Maidana landed a right to the body and missed two overhand rights, then took a deep breath. Maidana landed a couple jabs, Mayweather landed a grazing overhand left. Mayweather landed a short overhand right. Mayweather landed a looping uppercut to the body, Maidana landed a grazing overhand right. Mayweather threw a hard jab into Maidana's chest at the bell.

For the first 1:20 of the 8th, the two began center ring, then Mayweather circling with Maidana stalking, some punches were exchanged, most not connecting, but both fighters landed a few grazing punches. At 1:20 into the round, Mayweather landed a sharp jab-overhand R combo. A few seconds later, Maidana landed a jab-grazing overhand R combo, and Mayweather quickly clinched. Maidana backed Mayweather into a corner, where Mayweather landed a short overhand left and a short overhand right, then he quickly pivoted Maidana into the same corner and landed a short sharp left hook and a sharp jab. A few seconds later, Maidana backed Mayweather into another corner, and landed a good overhand right, Mayweather clinched and Maidana dug in a couple lefts to the body. A couple brief exchanges, with both fighters landing a couple overhand shots. Then Mayweather landed a grazing left hook to the head, Maidana went low and Mayweather went over the top to clinch, and in that clinch Mayweather shrieked, claiming “he bit my ****ing hand”; there was a delay as referee Bayless called on the doctor, and then warned Maidana and his corner, while replay suggested Maidana likely did bite Mayweather on the palm of Mayweather's left glove. By the time the round resumed, only a few seconds were left, Maidana pressed forward and Mayweather landed a nice short left hook while going backwards.

Mayweather began the 9th ducking and moving, keeping his gloves high, and Maidana threw a few punches into his gloves. Mayweather's first punch of the round was a hard overhand right that he landed about 50 seconds into the round. There were a couple clinches in which Maidana threw a few lefts to the head (Mayweather had his glove up) and body. Maidana backed up Mayweather, Mayweather landed a good short left hook, Maidana came in low, Mayweather clinched. A brief exchange during which Mayweather threw his left forearm forward twice, Bayless told him to “watch the elbows”. At the bell, Maidana walked toward a neutral corner, and Mayweather helpfully pointed him towards the correct corner.

The 10th began in center ring, Maidana threw a few pawing jabs, Mayweather's first punch was a lunging, good short left hook. Maidana threw a pawing jab, Mayweather countered with a sharp jab. Maidana pressing, Mayweather moving/ducking/clinching, Maidana landed a few shots, including lefts to the head and body, and a couple jabs. Maidana came in weak with a jab, Mayweather landed a good counter overhand right. Maidana got Mayweather against the ropes and landed a sweeping left hook to the face, followed by a couple potshot jabs and a missed overhand right, Mayweather clinched. Maidana got Mayweather into a corner, wildly missed an overhand right, Mayweather ducked under and came up, and Maidana pushed his left forearm into Mayweather's face, and Bayless briefly warned him against it. Maidana landed a decent jab, then he short-armed a jab which Mayweather countered with a hard looping overhand right. Maidana landed a jab, got Mayweather against the ropes, landed a grazing right to the body and Mayweather quickly clinched Maidana's right arm. Maidana missed an overhand right, Mayweather landed a decent R-L uppercut combo.

After touching gloves to start the 12th, Mayweather immediately backed up and started hopping/moving around the periphery of the ring, Maidana followed him, but did not throw any punches until a couple of tentative jabs 35 seconds into the round, and Mayweather quickly clinched. Mayweather threw his first punch of the round at 45 seconds in, a left hook into Maidana's glove. About 1:20 in, Maidana finally managed a brief grazing flurry mostly to the body, Mayweather clinched. Mayweather moving, Maidana following, by 2 minutes into the round Maidana had only added a few pawing jabs and a few missed rights to the body. With 30 seconds left, Maidana threw a brief flurry mostly into Mayweather's gloves. Mayweather landed a good jab, Maidana countered with a good straight right. Maidana missed a flurry, Mayweather clinched and looked at the clock, and the fight ended seconds later.

This fight was obviously nowhere near as compelling as the first one was. Maidana had gotten his tactics right in the first fight, trying to pressure Mayweather inside and rough him up, although his workrate tailed off in those later rounds. He came in leaner for this fight, and I expected him to have improved stamina to better pressure Mayweather inside for the entire fight. However, Mayweather made a particular effort in this fight to move around the entire ring, and while Maidana followed him around, he did not show any particular urgency in pressing the attack, perhaps a misguided attempt to better pace himself for the full 12 rounds, and he hardly got inside at all to pressure Mayweather. The few times he did get in close, Mayweather was quick to clinch, and referee Bayless was just as quick to break the clinches, preventing Maidana from doing much extra work in close. Bayless meant well, but his performance in this fight was mediocre, as his being so quick to break clinches made him seem far too influenced by the first fight, and surely wrecked whatever chance Maidana did have in this fight. The clinches were also numerous enough that Bayless should at least have given Mayweather a formal warning. Bayless also took far too long a timeout in the 8th when Mayweather claimed he was bitten; although I had no problem with him checking the glove, once he found nothing the fight should have immediately resumed. In addition, the point deduction against Maidana was very soft. Mayweather, for his part, showed he still has his hand and foot speed intact, he varied his attack to the head and body, he showed good ring movement, and he showed his defensive skills are pretty much intact, although he got hit cleanly with a few hard shots, too many by his own admission. Mayweather paced his offensive output more slowly than in the first fight, throwing exactly 100 fewer punches than in that fight, but again as in the first fight he was very efficient, landing more than 50% of his total punches and power punches. Maidana, due to Mayweather's ring movement and his own lack of pressure, threw almost 300 fewer punches than in the first fight, and landed almost 100 fewer. Still, while not nearly as compelling and entertaining as the first fight, this was still a worthy fight, as Maidana definitely deserved the rematch based on the first fight, and it was very interesting to see Mayweather approach only the second rematch of his career. Mayweather said postfight that he plans to next fight in May, and it was gratifying that he sounded at least somewhat open to a possible Pacquiao fight, given that right now there is no other obvious deserving candidate for that fight.
