Floyd Mayweather jr. vs Pernell Whitaker: Who you rate higher p4p and who beats who h2h?

This forum has a soft spot for Pernell and tends to dislike Floyd for the opportunism later in his career and for being a modern fighter who people feel has done enough to be ranked alongside the ATGs of the sport's overall history. I have a feeling the general sentiment of this thread will be favourable to Pernell and will mention how he wasn't beaten clearly until he was an old addict fighting way above his best weight against a monster like Trinidad yet gloss over or downplay Floyd's own multi-weight accomplishments and how he was never beaten in his career period. It's close but Floyd takes it for me. Just as dominant over a longer period of time and across more weight classes.

H2H though, Floyd did often have his hands full with southpaws due to his issues getting his jab off which stifled his offence early in most of his matches against southpaws since to his jab being a critical tool for Floyd and how he works his way into fights. Yet at the same time, I've never seen anyone truly outbox Floyd, his stylistic poison seemed to be highly unpredictable, unorthodox brawlers who stretched his defensive reflexes to their limits through frequent level changes and unique combinations coming in which smothered the room Floyd needs to work with. The Judah fight is perhaps the best frame of reference for how Floyd vs Pernell would look and while Judah did have success early, Floyd nonetheless kept finding a home for his straight right and mixed it beautifully with his left hook. Judah was no Pernell Whitaker though mind you, and Pernell was more disciplined and intelligent than Judah by a huge distance. Pernell himself had issues with a slickster in McGirt though. It would be an incredibly closely contested bout either way. I'd maybe favour Pernell at 135 and Floyd at 147.

 

Mayweather I'd rank higher P4P without any doubt, way better wins and more overall good wins then Whitaker. As for H2H could go either way really hard to predict I would say Mayweather at his best was much more consistent then Whitaker while Whitaker was much more flashier but did get caught and knocked down at times when he underestimated his opponent and did have come close fights against McGirt and Vasquez so I'd have to favor Mayweather slightly just off of his consistency but could really go either way.

Mayweather across the board, he adjusts to him, outjabs him, his balance and positioning was better, he’d be in a better position to land and counter, he’d force Whittaker off balance and to commit just too much and counter occasionally, for the most part outjabbing him and timing his head movement with the right as Whittaker dips to his own left side.
Undefeated fighters, for some reason, seem to become journeymen in H2H matchups.

P4P ranking its Mayweather on a H2H basis it could go either way honestly it would be a very close decision.

Resume wise this is quite tricky. Floyd had better longevity, but prime run is Whitaker for me. Ramirez 1 was a clearer win than even Castillo 2, not to mention Castillo 1 which I think Floyd lost. Chavez for me was an even worse robbery than Ramirez 1 and probably better than anything Floyd did.

So I think I'd go with Pea. Think he hit the slightly higher peak, but have no problems with anyone thinking Floyd had the better resume. He had very good peaks and his consistency over all those years was just amazing.

H2h, who the **** knows. So many actual fights that I get wrong, so how in the hell am I going to be confident of any prediction about this one?

 

Floyd's greater and more well-rounded but Pea was better at what he did best imo.

Floyd's p4p resume is incredible,I'd assume he could go 2-2 with Duran for a close quadrilogy,but Pernell outhustles him in a close fight.
