he is amongst the greatest defensive fighters even with the limited opposition but didnt see enough of him against the right fighters to rank him in the top 25 goat

This is my point. Wonderful, wonderful boxer but not enough fights on his resume to rank him any higher in my opinion.

For those who feel Floyd ran from the best... would a Marg victory over Cotto improve Floyd's rankings on all time lists?

I think this early retirement will really hurt him in a few years. If Cotto or any other fighter from current WW dominate soon the division and Mayweather will not fight him it will be seen as the serious hole in his legacy.

What happens though if all at the top begin to lose to each other. For example, if Cotto is beaten by Marg then Marg by Williams etc. How do you see it then?

Personally, I dont see Cotto getting beaten by Marg anyways, but just putting another slant on it

Mayweather is the embodiment of the modern elite fighter. Earns a **** load of money for old rope. When was the last time he fought a legit 147 fighter?

The same thing will happen with mayweather as with most other fighters, he has just retired and most people only point out his faults. Revisionism will come in 5 years or so when we will get a true reflection of floyds career.

For me he is top 25 atg, i've had him top 20 before but that is a tad high possibly, he would have been top 15 had he fought and beat cotto and i hope they get it on next year sometime though doubt it now, i think this retirement from PBF is for real. Floyd still had a great career 5 weight classes he held titles at and was the legitimate champ in 3 of those. Not many people in boxing history can claim that.

I think the oscar fight in future will be looked at more favourably for floyd. He beat a legitimate atg who is a naturally much bigger fighter (yes i know they both started out at 130 but oscar was really a natural 140-47 fighter who blossemed into a proper 154 where as floyd is more a 130-40) at a weight where floyd was not comfortable, yes oscar was not prime but i don't think as over the hill as people believe.

The rest of floyd resume is not bad, hernadez, corrales, castillo, judah and hatton are all very good tier 2 type wins but he does lack the big marque names to put on the resume. He makes top 25 for me through a decent resume, unbelivable skill set and great achievment with winning a title in 5 divisions and 3 legitimate and the fact he retired undefeated, a feat rarely seen in boxing.

If floyd stays retired did he underachieve. Slightly in my view yes, he missed cotto, cotto was pbf key, a future atg who had the tools to beat him, if floyd had beat cotto he would have had that great boxer in there prime on his resume. Still an all time great without cotto and will be look upon favourably in the future but with cotto on his resume he would hav been even higher

    Nice analysis.

I still have him top 35 rather than 25. Cotto aside, I still think his resume is fairly short (39 fights? Off the top of my head I dont think anyone else in my Top 35 only fought 39). I agree that as the years pass he will rise in most people's lists. I disagree he will rise that highly though! The reason most people rise over time is because the people they have beaten suddenly look alot better than initially considered. Case in point - Lennox Lewis's win over Klit when Klit is now considered the top heavy (when fit). For Floyd though, there isnt really anyone around who will improve vastly enough to improve Floyd's record post retirement. I'm comfortable with him in my top 35 and fairly comfortable that he wont rise too far above that.

Cotto could have changed that. If Floyd had fought and beat him and then Cotto went on to dominate WW then Floyd would rise through my rankings.

So no case against Maywether will be taken if division will end in a mess.
The only one serious treat is that Floyd did not fought Mosley cause he had an opportunity.

    That was Mosley's fault.

PBF will go down in my eyes as the most talented fighter of his generation whom unfortunatly left me wanting due to not facing miguel cotto, margarito or paul williams.

but yes most talented guy i have seen in the ring with the exception of ray lenord.
