Floyd Mayweather - one of the best ever

I think Hearns would have been a nightmare for Floyd.

Duran for me was the greater fighter but I think Hearns would have give Floyd nightmare and he would have gone no-where near!!!

 

Yeah people have very very short memories. Just 30 years ago, the Welterweights (ie Leonard, Hearns and Duran) all beat him, as does Benetiz. Then we had Pea who was much better offensively, Oscar (who took him all the way well past his prime), even perhaps Pryor

 

He'd not have gone near Hearns, **** that.

 

I believe he is an elite talent more so at 140 and below than 147 were id favour quite a few of the greats to beat him

 

He was much better at 130 than at 147. I think he has amazing talents but hasn't fought enough to back it up and silence the critics.

Prime Oscar, Hearns, Duran, SRL all beat Floyd in my book. A prime Duran would KO Floyd.

He needs to step it up in the next 2 years and really add to his record. Stop Cotto, Beat Pac (i think he would stop Pac) and then beat Martinez at 154 (probably wont get as much props for this due to Martinez age in 2013)

 

I've heard that a few times, have you not seen the vid where mosley comes up with every excuse in the book not to fight him. Even throws in toothache as a reason and that was arguably back in the days of mosleys prime

 

I would say its fair to call him one of the best ever.

You can argue him as maybe the greatest super featherweight of all time.

He is probably a top 40 all time fighter p4p.

One of the greatest defensive fighters.

One of the names that defines his own era.

With Floyd, it's a case of if you say it often enough it becomes true. People have heard enough times Johnny Nelson and others use words like "genius" to describe him, to the point where people start believing it's true and repeating the same old things, without even knowing what it is they're saying. Kind of like describing fighters as "slick" without knowing what slick is. It's fashionable to speak highly of Floyd, the villain. Especially with Brits who for some reason love to mock Hatton for his performance in that fight,

The thing is, he could've fought Cotto, Margarito, Mosley and Paul Williams years ago. He could've fought Pac 2 years ago, he could've asked Martinez to meet him at 154. It hasn't happened, and all this "He wudda done this, he wudda done that" doesn't mean anything. He didn't do it. There's a reason. PED allegations, money issues, there was and always will be something getting in the way. So **** him and his undefeated record.



I agree, he loses to SRL, Duran, Hearns. Real ATG fighters.

 

You could make an argument for him being the greatest Super Featherweight of all time, although I think Alexis Arguello would have something to say about that. But the greatest fighter of all time? you've got to be having a laugh.

He has avoided all the biggest challenges since leaving the Lightweight division.

Cotto, Hatton, Tszyu at Light welter

Mosley, Cotto, Margarito, Williams at welter 3 or 4 years ago.

He also had the chance to fight Winky Wright after De La Hoya at 154lbs if I remember correctly.

These are the sort of fights you need to be taking on and winning to be considered in the same breath as the greats IMO.

So Mayweather, who started out at 130 pounds needs to be beating Winky Wright at 154 to be considered along with the greats (you never said the greatest, just the greats). I don't want to ever hear you considering Eder Jofre along with any greats then, because he didn't do anything like that either.

Floyd is not better than Leonard, Duran or Hearns...debatable over Benitez and thats just a start....P. Whitaker? hmmm no chance.

 

Mayweather is a brilliant fighter, I enjoy watching him operate. He's not one of the greatest fighters of all time. When I use the word 'greatest', yes with the letters 'est' on the end, I'm talking about a fighter who is in contention for being in the top five or so fighters that have ever lived. bviously Mayweather doesn't fit that criteria, he's not knocking Ezzard Charles and Sugar Ray Robinson off their perches, there is a clear distinction between the careers of the likes of those fighters and Mayweathers. Mayweather is the best fighter in the world hands down right now, and it's pretty gay that his gay fight with Pacquiao has never happened. Mayweather gets a **** time off fans because there's a lot expected of him, and I think that's wrong. It's as though he can do no right. I see him doing fine things in the ring and getting hated for it when if a lesser fighter did it it would be impressive. Sugar Ray Robinson was always expected to win and nobody ever used that as a bad mark against him. We should be consistent, just because he's expected to win doesn't mean we should slate him, it means he's very good at what he does.
