Mayweather with his win over Ortiz now set a new precedent for boxing. With the publicity of this fight and the popularity of Mayweather I think that now if this happens again they would bring this specific fight up. The saying "protect yourself at all times" now is in full effect! This could be positive now where every fighter will be more cautious of attacks like this but it could also be negative where more fighters would take advantage because a boxing legend has done it and got away with it. What do you guys think?

Something tells me that if Ortiz won in that manner then you and many other people wouldn't complain. Rather you would praise Ortiz for a magnificent victory and recite the argument of "protect yourself at all times."

Jack Dempsey did it to Jack Sharkey in '27. Sure he was questioned after the fight but the public took his side especially since he was wildly popular and loved. Mayweather has played the villian so long that he's typecast; his reputation can't absorb any perceived infractions without taking rounds of criticism.

    As for Mayweather ducking?

Not a chance. The only fighters he didn't fight were Bob Arum fighters. He tried to fight Shane in 1999 and in 2006 and Mosley (being the bigger draw at the time) declined.

If victor ortiz would of won like that I would feel the same.. I would say that victor won due to sucker punches. I wouldnt look at it as a legit victory! Only a dummy would celebrate that victory.. The Knock out wasnt due to boxing skill. It suprised me that an elite fighter would take advantage of that kinda situation and win due to his opponent thinking it was a break! Mayweather could have possibly caught victor clean during an exchange later in the fight but we will never know because the fight didnt materialize.

I honestly dont feel floyd had the pop to KO ortiz when Ortiz was actually fighting back. Floyd caught victor while he was relaxed and not ready and landed 2 perfect punches at point blank range! :hat

It's not like people don't condemn Ortiz for the headbutt, or the hug and kiss or failing to put his guard up. People make fun of him a lot.

The thing about the sucker punch is that we expected more from Mayweather. He's one of the best of his generation. He was well on his way to winning the fight. Couldn't he have won it with a little more class or style?

If you're one of the best, more is expected of you.

new precedent? give me a break, you're acting like they just invented the phrase "protect yourself at all times". Only the naive ones decide not to heed those words.

Floyd jr set a new precedent for boxing history? Showing dishonor as his best talent might be appealing to his die hard fans but I don't think no one will going to follow his "unethical approach" as long as the numero uno pound for pound shows companionship & sportsmanship inside & outside the ring Floyd jr will be seen as a joke especially for a man with honor... but for boxers this should be a lesson to protect your self at all times because your opponent might be as dirty as Floyd jr... and I don't think no one with the right mind will going to say to their kid that, what Floyd jr has done should be followed especially if your kid is on the receiving end.

Exactly he's an elite fighter and we expect him to act like a true professional! He let his emotions get the best of him, he knew what he did wasnt right. Did you notice how he got defensive really quick with larry merchant in the post fight interview.. right before cortez started counting ortiz out he looked worried for a second like he was about to get DQ'd! :hat
