It is so very difficult for me to picture Pacquiao and Paul Williams fighting. It'd be a bit like welterweight version of Haye/Valuev.

Williams punches too much. Mayweather will counter the sh-t out of him.

Floyd will never fight this guy as he knows he will lose .. notice how he never even mentions him ... i find it a bit sad that the best welterweight in the world cannot even be mentioned in a super fight with either of the premiere fighters in his division ..

I agree, i think mayweather would expose williams actually and beat him with relative ease.

Pacquiao and Martinez are harder fights for mayweather than Williams would be in my opinion

As a Mayweather fan I have to admit this is a problematic style, mainly due to masive size of Williams, his speed, athleticism and pressure. However as a boxer Williams is lacking with his open defense, fighting small, openness to counters. You'd also expect FMJ to go 1 better than Quintana/Martinez did, make Williams miss more, counter him better etc. Then again Williams may raise his game ad fight smarter

Its a fight that may well happen down the line if Williams becomes MW champ and Mayweather fancies doing something a bit historic going to MW

Last year i'd go for Floyd as he's just a far superior boxer by far, but now i see Williams getting the UD on work rate regardless of Floyds pot-shot counters, he'll get outworked, horrible fight to watch in the process.

Why? Both guys are tall, both guys dont utilize their height and reach advantage, and both guys like to brawl and throw a lot of punches. I would say their fighting styles are quite similar, only that Williams throws a bit more punches. When facing a technician like Mayweather, it doesnt really matter the volume of punches and usually these type of offensive fighters only get stopped quicker, because they leave more openings and only know one way, and thats to come forward and like Corrales after a few rounds, they become stalking zombies and their offensive output decreases but their momentum forward doesnt.
Williams simply cant box, cant use his advantages, and its been shown against mid level guys like Quintana and even Cintron for a few rounds. His game is offense offense.

Floyd takes it...too much speed and movement but he may get hit a little more than he is used to, if Paul puts pressure on him

What Freddie Roach says about Mayweather's legs is true. He no longer has the mobility he had in the lower weights or even a few years ago at 147. I'd still favour him over the lumberjack but it could get messy for him at this stage of his career.

It would cause him big problems against Pacquiao as well...

I'd probably favour Mayweather's timing and accuracy here to pierce Williams' shitty defence enough to take a decision....if Williams speed and workrate don't intimidate or discourage him, that is. It's like teeto said - Williams doesn't use his natural advantages enough. Someone needs to drill it into him that it's possible to set a fast pace but still retain his distance and not get hit as much.

Some folk on here will already know that I rate Mayweather a fair deal lower than the average fan does. But pure workrate on it's own isn't enough to beat him, not when you're wide open to be hit all of the time. Still, I enjoy watching Williams and he could make it difficult for Floyd, who isn't likely to take such a fight in the first place.

Personally i think Roach is in for a big surprise if he really believes Mayweather's legs are gone. Only two fights ago he outmaneuvred the life out of Marquez, and whilst Marquez has poor footwork, other opponents have always fell into the line of Marquez' fire. Marquez clearly wasn't at his best, but strictly from a performance viewpoint, Mayweather's footwork was quality imo. I know he didn't 'run' so to speak, but the footwork was evident from bell to bell.

My opinion is that the only deterioration Mayweather has suffered is in speed, not much else of significance.

How so? Because he didn't move that much against Mosley? He knew he had the beating of him standing in the center of the ring, that's why he didn't move. Whenever Floyd did get trapped in a corner, he got his way out of it quickly and easily.

It's ridiculous how Floyd gets called a runner all the time for using lateral movement, he then barely uses any and stands in the center of the ring in essentially a shoot-out and now apparently 'his legs have gone'.

There's nothing "wrong" with Marquez' footwork, but the chubby JMM that showed up to fight Mayweather wasn't exactly a challenge in that department. Anyway, Mayweather was a much bigger, sharper man and didn't exactly have to pull an Ali to dictate the action. He had just about every physical advantage you could look for. So I don't think that fight tested either's feet particularly.

Well, we had to disagree at some point. Also, bear in mind that fighters can age fast. Mayweather had the best part of a year off between Marquez and Mosley.

I think the outcome of the fight (if it happens) could very well be decided on this. Whenever Pacquiao has had trouble with an opponent, it's been because they've had the footwork to make him fall short and counter or pick and choose their spots. When they have been ponderous, he tends to run them over.

Footwork isn't just how fast you run, or whether you dance around a lot. It's how quickly you can adjust to an advancing opponent, control the range, keep balanced, move off to the sides after throwing etc. On those counts I think Mayweather has dropped off markedly.

I didn't see a problem with any of those in the Mosley fight, but fair enough. I think it's just the way in which he approached the fight and fought.
