Just going through my old Ring magazines the other day, and came across an interesting wee article that talked about PBF's chances against the Lightweight legends. It was the April 04 edition, and the article was by William Dettloff. Just wanted to know what you thought of the picks: 1. Mayweather-Joe Gans: PBF late KO/UD 2. Mayweather-Benny Leonard: Leonard by close decision 3. Mayweather-Tony Canzoneri: Canzoneri by commanding decision 4. Mayweather-Bob Montgomery: Montgomery by close decision 5. Mayweather-Beau Jack: Jack by lopsided decision 6. Mayweather-Ike Williams: Williams by UD in a hard fought, close battle 7. Mayweather-Joe Brown: PBF by UD 8. Mayweather-Carlos Ortiz: Ortiz in 10 9. Mayweather-Roberto Duran: Duran by UD/late stoppage 10. Mayweather-Pernell Whitaker: PBF by close decision Do you agree with the Ring's picks in these fantasy fights? They have Mayweather 3-7 in these match-ups. How do you have it? Is there anyone else they could have included in their 10 contenders?
Here ya go: "One way to beat a guy like Mayweather is with unceasing pressure. Its hard for a slick guy like Mayweather to execute all those moves he does if a guy is in his chest. More to the point, if a guy is in his chest, the moves are worthless. Getting in a guy's chest is what Jack was all about. That's what he did. It was all pressure and non-stop punches and brute strength. That's what got him more main event fights in Madison Square Garden than any fighter in history, including Joe Louis. If you were going to beat Jack, you had to be stronger and tougher than he was - that's why Jack couldn't do anything with Ike Williams - and it would help if you could back him up once in a while. Mayweather wasn't stronger than Jack was, he isn't tougher, and he couldn't make Jack back-up if he hit him with the ring stool. This one isn't hard; Jack by lopsided decision." (Ring magazine, April 2004, "Mayweather vs. The All-Time Greats").
Well then I suggest you head back to the General Forum and stay there. Or just post at a different site altogether.
As do I. They give Williams the edge in a bout he's at a stylistic disadvantage in yet they favor Floyd over someone who has every edge in Whitaker. Odd list. I'll have to see more of a few of them before making any real judgement.
Duran would beat him yes no doubt about it, but break him in half i seriously doubt that, it would be a hard fought fight with Duran taking a fairly clear UD in my opinion, but far from easily
I'm just being sincere man,Floyd has never been pushed to the limit, how would these guys penetrate his defence
His defense was penetrated by no more than Jose Luis Castillo. He has had trouble early on with pretty much every top notch fighter he's faced aside from Corrales when he was at his best weight. His ability to adapt is a good thing, but it also means he's vulnerable and capable of losing early rounds. His defense is certainly no better than the likes of Locche, Canto, Whitaker, Benitez, Pep, etc. A guy like Ray Leonard would outbox him flat-footed. You're simply overrating him because you don't seem to know enough about other fighters or styles to make the comparison. That's a rookie mistake I used to make. I thought the same thing about Winky Wright laughably enough. He's never been pushed to the limit(though he was against Castillo) because he's simply never faced any truly elite competition. His resume pails in comparison to pretty much everyone else listed. All in all, he's a damn good fighter, but I've seen better.
You could turn that on its head and say how would mayweather penetrate whitaker or even duran defence though.
