It's an interesting fight, but I think it really comes down to two counter-punchers trying to make the other lead. In a fight where one is longer and quicker and the other is more willing to take the lead, Mayweather begins to win battles of positioning and over the fight, Tony starts to fall behind. In the end I think Mayweather wins a close decision, based on cleaner punching.
I'm sure of one thing, Canzoneri will go the distance. He was only stopped once in 175 fights, his last! I want to lean so slightly to Floyd but I've never seen Mayweather under pressure in a fast paced 15 round tussle with an all time great.. I think Tony's chance for victory is to wear Floyd out in rounds 12-15 . I almost feel there's no wrong answer as to who wins though.
Great post mate. I don't partake in cross era fantasy H2H fights for a multitude of reasons. I do enjoy comparing records/greatness of fighters from different eras, though. Canzernori bear the greater prime fighters, imo. Mayweather was more dominant. Canzernori lost during his prime, to fighters who weren't as good relative to their era as some fighters Mayweather beat. 2 x unequivocal ATG fighters imo. I rank Mayweather #18 p4p all time. That list post #25 is a WIP, currently Canzernori is in the #30-35 bracket. That said, I rate dominance highly. Its reasonable for those who purely rank based on depth of win resume, to have Canzernori higher.
I think a debate just as interesting as how the fight would play out, is actually which deserves to be ranked higher. And personally, I'm all for Canzoneri. While Mayweather himself has an impressive résumé - especially for his era - Canzoneri's is much, much better. He racked up wins against the likes of Kid Chocolate, Kid Berg, McLarnin, Klick, Ambers, Arizmendi, Fernandez, Petrolle, Benny Bass and an aging Johnny Dundee. Not to mention, he beat most of them multiple times. He also moved up from 126 to be the man at 140, giving Barney Ross two of the hardest fights of his career. In fact, if memory serves me right, he only lost the second fight due to low blow point deductions, coming a hair's breadth away from winning both of them. However, there's absolutely no shame in losing fair and square to Barney Ross. What's more, is had he weighted a mere 2lbs less than he did against Kid Chocolate, and he himself would not only have been the first four weight world champion, but match Armstrong's claim to hold three titles at the same time.
In these type of threads normally i go for the early era fighter because they usually faced sterner opposition but here i go for Mayweather without much conviction
Canzo definitely didn't fight like most of the time. He was undoubtedly greater than Floyd also. However, with the latters reach and speed, if he wanted to peck n' poke his way through this one he has a great chance.
Spot on. Barney Ross was an ATG tough as nails, no shame in losing to him. It pains me to say this but I think Fairweather wins this one by close decision. However, I am 100% convinced Fairweather won't stop Tony, who goes the distance and has always a puncher's chance.
Canzi was undoubtedly greater imo John. His CV swamps Mayweather's for depth, quantity and quality and he either beat or ran close too many other fighters who can be argued as top twenty type greats themselves, which should be viewed as critical. Mayweather wouldve needed to knock off some prime top 50 atgs and not have stage managed portions of his career to protect his zero, in order to rank higher while having only had 50 pro fights compared to Canzoneri's 170. His dominance and longevity help to close the gap but aren't enough. In terms of the fight......hard to say. Obviously Floyd was greatly skilled and naturally much bigger, which like others have already said, might swing things his way. It's not a h2h fight I've given much thought to tbh. The ageing, smaller but still good Canzoneri above his prime weight is the type of excellent but disadvantaged fighter Mayweather probably would have strategically opted to go up against in typical fashion to get the notch on his bedpost, the f*cker. Right after he knocks on Robinson's door accompanied by twenty other c*nts, saying (from behind a big chaps legs while shaking his fist) how he's the bestest ever in a suspiciously high pitched voice and that he'll fight him anytime anywhere in Las Vegas in a fifty foot ring for a 90/10 split. And then run back to his twat wagon like Barry Goldberg. This content is protected
