Floyd Mayweather vs Alexis Arguello at 130

Probably fmj on points in a 12 round fight, a 15 round fight would either be a floyd points or Arguello knockout victory.

I'd say Floyd, but very, very tentatively.

We shouldn't forget that some very, very average fighters have laid hands on him (Augustus, Corley, Judah.)

If Alexis lands on him, he might be able to take him out.

It will be hard for Alexis to find the shot though.

One thing I'm certain of however, Alexis wouldn't be Corrales'ed.

Sadly I agree, I think Alexis would get countered silly.

 

Arguello.

Alexis is superior to Floyd in everyway that matters in this match-up. Yes Floyd is nice defensively but, he has never come close to facing the kind of wicked one-shot power placement text-book combination, Joe Louis-like firepower of Arguello.

Not to mention the full blown heart of a Lion. This is not Gatti or Coralles. Two decent punchers; one chinny and the other average/very good. This is Arguello who stood toe to toe for 14 with the naturally heavier Pryor and near took his head off. Floyd takes that shot and it is the ambulance next.

Floyd will be very wise to stay on the move. The entire fight. That shoulder roll will never cut it here. The power that he would get touched by would make him know to move it.

So now he is moving and Alexis is stalking, following, patient, looking for shots. Alexis will take hits like he did in the Mancini fight but, nothing to bad to stop his march. Sooner or later, like the Mancini fight, Alexis will start finding the target and the target will have to fight him off. Floyd and for my money not too many others at that weight can stop Alexis from coming forward and landing.

Floyd's chin would be tested and found wanting. He would be stopped like Mancini and the even greater, tougher, more powerful Olivares.

Floyd has been rocked by men would have been outta there in 3 round if faced with Alexis. Imagine Chop-Chop Corley hook having the killing power of Alexis and at the same time landing with great frequency.

Arguello in 10...earlier if Floyd decided to rumble.

 

Floyd is a very intelligent fighter and I can't see him being pulled in to a brawl very easily. If he was, cheers, because he will get floored. But I can see him winning a slick decision at 12 or 15, obviously moreso at 12.

 

Mayweather, comfortable UD. Style and size advantage. Arguello gets his shots in, no doubt - certainly a much higher level operator than anyone Floyd has ever actually gone up against - but I trust Mayweather's chin and general toughness just fine.

 

I'd say 130lbs Mayweather was in his prime. That performance against Corrales was probably the best of his whole career. It would be very difficult for Arguello to beat the same Mayweather that destroyed Corrales.

 

Very possible Mayweather would have to triumph over the kind of dazed spell marcel went through to win on points.

he doesn't control ring-centre at mid-range with backfoot moments, pivots and turns well enough not to get moved into corners and onto the ropes every so often.....he's much more of a rhythmic disengage and move a bit then plant a bit boxer, especially at 130 where he was a boxer-puncher.He's not going to just do a benitez vs Cervantes, Whitaker vs Nelson or kalambay vs Mccallum sort of job on arguello where he can stay a step ahead constantly at ring-centre with little shifts and slides on a slow-retreat while rarely getting pinned.

It would be interesting as it's a fight he has the stylistic and physical advantage in(though not by a massive amount if it's the Arguello that has just moved up from feather and still had solid handspeed), but there are enough weaknesses in his arsenal and opposition faced to make me pause.

I could see Mayweather using his movement, speed, defence and punchpicking to build up a nice lead, but not hurting Arguello enough to deter him and starting to struggle more as the nicaraguan gets more bodyshots(especially left hooks) through when Floyd is moved to the ropes and corners.

Definitely a "chin-check" sort of fight as much as it is a very winnable one for him.Having solid toughness and being Arguello-proof are two very different things.

 

I think Mayweather is too big for him. He looks big against Leonard, at least.

I don't think he's near to a Pac in that respect.imo he's physically unimpressive at 147 and winning with his superior talent and technical ability.he doesn't look like he's suddenly at weight he should be at all along

A pretty natural 130-140@prime sort of fighter imo.Probably doesn't stay as long at 130 if he'd fought decades ago, and he was big there, but he looked right at 135 and 140 imo.

There's not too much difference in size between the two, for me.Arguello was a big 130 and good sized 135 fighter too.Pryor certainly wasn't too big for him per se.

Junior is certainly not too big. I'm almost positive he could have made 130 same day, and 135 as well.

lora, I think Floyd is a lovely sized and well proportioned fighter from 135-147 in any other era. He'd be fine.
