Who takes it? Basilio would be well suited for the 154lb division if it had existed in his days as a boxer. He had great toughness and professionalism, and owns a decision win over the great, if aged, Sugar Ray Robinson. Mayweather has only fought in the division once, and this is clearly above his best weight class. This evens out a matchup in which he has the superior athleticism and speed. Thoughts?
Basilio is garbage. Mayweather 120-108. I don't care if he had thunderous power, he simply has horrific technique and constantly looks terrible on film. No doubt a product of a more primitive era. This is a guy that Joy Boy can definitely pot shot his way to victory against, as much as I LOVE to pick against Mayweather.
basilio would beat floyd by decision physical strength, solid chin, constant pressure. he'd outwork floyd and win on the cards.
Fullmer had to beat the holy fire out of Basilio to finally whipped him. PBF just isn't tough enough to beat this type of 50's fighter at Jr. Middleweight. (at welter though, I go with Floyd.
Are you suggesting that a 160lb Sugar Ray Robinson, albeit past his prime, was a lesser fighter than the 154lb Mayweather that fought DLH? Remember, Basilio was fighting outside of his weight class when he beat SRR, it was a great achievement really.
floyd by decision.. basilio is a very good fighter but i still think floyd will potshot his way to victory
Repeat. :good Amsterdam starts a past v. current thread, the point being current is always better. acb starts a serie of past v. current threads, the intent being to glorify the past. Two posters putting forth their agendas by setting ridiculous matchups, each time without providing the minimum details. In which era would the fights take place? Unanswered. The fight is supposed to take place in some atemporal ring like it's ****ing Startrek. Would the fight take place in a context where the older boxer fights every second week whereas the younger one takes up to 6 months to recuperate from his previous fight? Not specified. Would the competition be the same? Would the training methods be the same? We hear crickets... Which environment would prevail? Judging? Sanctioning bodies? Would the mob be involved like in the not so glorious days of Primo Carnera? What?
For such a clever sounding post, you missed the fact that the fight would take place at 154lbs. Hint, hint... there was no 154lb division back then.
Yet I have made less than 20 or so threads about old vs new fighters of the several hundred threads I have started. Unlike Amsterdam's thread last night, I am not trolling for a reaction. This matchup genuinly intrigues me, and this being a boxing forum, its a good place to discuss it. In addition, I haven't voted on the poll or offered a winner, so clearly I am not just hyping classic boxers. To the contrary, Floyd is clearly the more skilled boxer in this matchup, but Basilio was as tough as they come and probably more suited to the weight. Its a difficult one to decide upon so I look for input from other posters. I like how posters get attacked here for talking about matchups that are less spoken of, but I suppose there would be no problem with making a thread that has been done so many times before.
