once upon a time this was the best fight that could be made in boxing...the two best fighters in the world
Outclassed is to big a word, but Floyd by UD.He would fight cautiously because of Tszyu’s power and win a boring decision.
I think Mayweather is too good for any version of Tszyu, albeit Tszyu at his best could have given him a decent fight. But had it happened around the time it was feasible (2004-05), with Mayweather in his absolute physical prime and Tszyu returning from injury and getting a bit long in the tooth? Mayweather puts a beating on him. Tszyu's peak years were probably 1999-2002.
Kostya was never in the top 2 of best fighters in the world. Lol. Not to mention he was winding down by the time Floyd fought at 140 lbs. Floyd would have picked him apart for an easy decision or late rounds tko.
Styles make fights. It's a much closer fight than people think because Tszyu had the timing & accuracy to get through to Floyd, and the power to keep Floyd honest. Tszyu has a distinct weakness vs aggressive, tough pressure fighters, but that's not what Floyd does.
Tszyu fans love to say that Kostya ate up slick fighters, but he never faced a truly great technician. Moreover, Tsyzu didn't apply the type of pressure that would get to Floyd... you need real lateral quickness, and a swarming, unorthodox style to trouble Floyd - that's why someone like Duran or Pryor would be Hell for Floyd. Tszyu attacked in straight lines, and did so methodically. There was no imagination to his style, therefore Floyd would figure his style out within a few rounds, and once he did, Tszyu never showed that he could adjust. Kostya would eating flush right hand leads by the mid rounds, and by the late rounds, Floyd would be in complete command. I admit, Tszyu can sometimes be underrated - but in the case he's being severely overrated. He ain't beating Floyd.
Even shot Roger Mayweather went the distance. He repeatedly hit Kostya with straight rights .I'm sure Vince Phillips saw the film. The main problem for Roger was his legs were gone. He couldn't move laterally like he did in his prime.
One thing that was ALWAYS overrated about Tszyu was his ring IQ. He was praised as having some genius level ring IQ, when he really didn't at all. Philips hit him with the same overhand right 2,000 times and Tszyu never understood how NOT to walk into it. He also kept walking into the same Hurtado right hand, but luckily for him Hurtado was fragile. Floyd would have a lead right festival on Tszyu. Tszyu was intelligent in that he understood where and when to hit guys to maximize damage, but he didn't show any adjustment intelligence, and like I said, he had no imagination to his style.
Floyd was never a true welterweight. He was a super lightweight beating welterweights and junior middleweights.
