The question isnt about the timeframe youre thinking if though.
Mayorga’s prime was 1999-2004 where he campaigned purely as a welterweight outside of the upset win of Adolfo Salazar in Venezuela and when he didnt make weight with Rivera and fought Mitchell on 1 day notice.
At junior middleweight against the likes of Mitchell,Piccirillo,de la Hoya,Mosley 1,Vargas(if you wanna count that one),Cotto he easnt very impressive.
I voted Mayweather on points btw but I dont think Mayorga getting stopped is impossible.
The gulf in class is THAT big.

The gulf in class was massive between Mayweather/Maidana, but Maidana still give Mayweather issues. It's not like Maidana did anything scientific, he just went straight at Mayweather and roughed him up, i don't see why Mayorga couldn't do something similar. It's not like Mayweather is going to hurt Mayorga, Mayorga's chin before he got ruined by Trinidad was granite.

I do understand your point though about the weight, i guess in a perfect world. If we can have Mayorga's prime in 1999-2004 against Mayweather, and he can replicate his form vs Forrest but at 154. That would be the best possible match up for Mayorga.

But i honestly don't think Mayweather stops a prime Mayorga, Mayorga shrugged off Forrest's right hand. And stupidly took Trinidad's best punches hanging his chin out early, and showed tremendous chin.

I see Mayweather winning a decision, but i think he has issues against Mayorga's wild style early on. Until he takes over in the 2nd half of the fight and distances himself from Mayorga.

I still believe Vernon won the rematch, but I'll never get how Mayorga just completely bum rushed him in the first one.

But I digress: Floyd looks precarious early until he get's his timing down and Mayorga slows down (which he will). Floyd then tees off for the rest of the fight and wins a fairly wide decision.

If you knew the sport like me, you’d know that Mosley performed better at 147 than 154.

Well that was my point-Mayorga’s prime was at 147 not 154.
I understand about his form but in the same time Mayweather’s best form was at 139 and 135 but it s a bit weird to put that in his 154 body as many nuances appear.
Also I feel at that point under Garcia Maidana was much cleaner and tighter in his work than earlier on plus more experienced.
He also fought the fight of his life for his biggest payday against Mayweather.
To give Mayorga some props the Trinidad fight was nothing short of outstanding and truthfully the Hagler-Hearns of tge 2000s.An epic performance from an undertrained Mayorga.
He was in great shape and it showed vs Mosley the first time where he was 1 second away from losing a competitive decision.Certainly much better thsn Margarito did 3 months later.

    SMH.

    Insane volume?

    Really?

    Anti Mayweather agenda?

    Where?

I’ve said that Floyd was on another level entirely to Mayorga.

They weren’t even on the same planet in terms of skills.

However, as always, it’s how they’d have matched up stylistically on the night.

It doesn’t matter if Canelo was better than Mayorga.

Canelo was also much better than Maidana.

    Look at what happened.

Floyd put in a masterclass against Canelo, yet just 8 months later, he barely beat Maidana, who was a crude B level fighter.

    Why?

    Because of STYLES.

Oscar, Cotto and Shane were all better than Mayorga.

Yes, Floyd beat all of those guys.

    It doesn’t matter.

Floyd was a safety first fighter with bad hands up at the higher weights.

He only had 3 fights at 154.

    Mayorga was a lunatic.

    He was big and aggressive.

He went toe to toe with guys at MW.

He wouldn’t have shown Floyd an ounce of respect.

He’d have walked forward at every opportunity.

Being the better fighter on paper means nothing in this game.

Yes, of course Floyd could have won.

    He was a genius.

However, he couldn’t have stopped a JMW-MW Mayorga, and he’d have had a very tough nights work.

That’s not me being anti-Mayweather, that’s me being a realist based on how they’d have matched up on the night.

Mayweather wins a very clear decision.

    Mayorga was never very good.

Sometimes it isn't how good the opposition is. The beauty of boxing is sometimes its simply how one fighter matches up against the other.
No one thought "Crude" Barkley would have any chance against the superior skills of Hearns, so what happened? Twice?.
When Forrest fought Mayorga the 1st time it was thought to be a mismatch, and simply a warm up for Forrest for bigger fights on the way..... Than Mayorga beat Forrest,,, Twice.
When Frazier fought Foreman, Frazier was a BIG favorite. But no one, not even the bookies in Vegas thought Foreman had a chance.
Now we look at Mayorga at or close to his best weight, against Mayweather Jr not at his. We can see May Jr doesn't have the firepower to dissuade Mayorga from simply rushing in on him. Sure a fighter like Canelo may have been better skilled ( but was he really, or was he more conventional skilled, giving Mayweather the opportunity to work off that?)
Castillo, Maidana, and Baldimir gave May Jr, a much harder fight than the bigger " better skilled " Canelo did. Why were they more successful and performed better against him than Canelo?
Simple , it's how they matched up against him. Their strengths was more effective in nullifying what May Jr . Liked to do than Canelo's ( Who's very overrated to begin with)
Mayorga was bigger , faster , harder hitting than Baldimir, Castillo and Maidana but fought very similar to them.
To say he wouldn't have a chance against May Jr. Is simply foolish.

That’s fine. But you obviously read my original post in its wrong context.

If you disagree with my opinion, we can debate it in a nice manner.

    That’s what the forum’s for.

I didn’t respond to you in an aggressive way.

I’m open for an objective debate.

We don’t have to agree with each other.

    An outstanding post.

It doesn’t matter about resumes or stats on paper.

It’s like some of these guys are new to the sport and have no idea about styles etc. (Not George C)

Canelo stood off of Floyd and wouldn’t press him.

Mayorga would have dogged Floyd in the pre-fight build up, he’d have pushed him at the weigh-in or done something stupid etc, and on the night, he’d have goaded Floyd and just driven at him without having given him an ounce of respect.

    That’s what would have happened.

Floyd was a genius. So I’d have had him winning. But Floyd couldn’t stop him like guys like Oscar did, so it would have been an extremely tough nights work for him.

Great post that's why alot of people thought Margarito, another crude fighter aggressive fighter. Would of been very dangerous fight for Mayweather in 06. And some people felt Mayweather avoided him during that period. I'm not gonna go into that, or whether or not Margarito was legit or not. But like you said just because Mayweather is way more skillful than Mayorga. Doesn't mean he beats Mayorga easy especially at 154.

Without hindsight would anyone of thought Maidana, would give Mayweather so much problems in their 1st fight ? i mean hell Amir Khan when he fought Maidana, arguably did better than Mayweather did against Maidana for the first 9 rounds atleast. That seems crazy to believe without hindsight, but as you said that's beauty of boxing and different styles.
