Floyd Mayweather was never a big draw like people think he always needed a mexican or mega star

    If
I think if you re-stated your initial assertion in the thread title slightly you'd be a lot closer to the truth of it. Floyd was clearly a massive draw as that list Dubblechin posted above bears out. The guy can rightly be called the PPV king.

Where I think the interesting aspect lies is in how he got to that status. As others posted earlier in the thread, initially he was pretty boy floyd and he didn't really move the needle, nowhere near what he eventually did as money mayweather. So to me the key is that although he had admirers from investe fans who appreciate the sweet science aspect of boxing, he was never a boxer who inspired mass affection from the casuals who determine whether a PPV hits the big numbers.

If you said Floyd was the or one of the most unpopular boxers to be heading PPV, then that would be closer to it. He took the heel route to riches rather than playing the hero.

He'd probably still be the biggest draw in boxing today, 6 years after his retirement.

He has more social media followers than canelo and he has way higher ppv numbers

    More people watch Floyd period

Canelo needed Floyd to even crack the top 10 ever ppv and he is only number 4

Floyd fought in Vegas and his gate receipts exceeded that fight of canelos

Floyd could easily have fought in a stadium if the average ticket was 100 bucks

Mayweather v Hatton and cotto done higher numbers than pac vs the same guys lol

I think mayweather v mosley was also bigger (will need to check it out)

Also mayweather v Oscar done twice the numbers as manny v Oscar

Floyd sold 1.2 million vs ortiz lol

Floyd is the biggest ppv star in boxing history and it's not even a debate

5 out of the top ten PPV's include Floyd. Cotto and McGregor were Mexicans?

Lying to yourself doesn't change the truth. Now ask yourself out of all those you just named. De La Hoya, Pac, McGregor and Canelo. If they were the only reason Mayweather numbers are high. Why didn't they ever surpass Mayweather numbers when fighting other fighters? Case closed!
