Mayweather barely beat a past-prime DeLaHoya; he wouldn't beat Robinson. He wouldn't have the firepower to hold him off, Robinson's offense would be too much. If Mayweather happened to get the upper hand in the tactical chess match, Robinson wouldn't just sit back and let Floyd outbox him. He'd turn it into a fight, and break Mayweather down. Just because Mayweather has better defense doesn't mean anything, Benitez had better defense than Hearns and Leonard, yet was decisively beaten by both. Willie Pep himself had better defense than everybody he ever fought, yet still lost a few. In fact Robinson beat Pep in the amateurs, and Pep is considered by many to be the Greatest Defensive fighter in the history of the sport. There's nothing Floyd could present Robinson with that Robinson hasn't dealt with at some point in his career.

How good would Floyd be if he had to fight another 100Xs -- no matter what the opposition -- before he fought Robinson? Have you any idea what the wear 'n' tear of a long fight career does? No matter how peerless someone is, the toll's tremendous. For SRR to perform at an elite level for so long -- time after time -- is miraculous.

Imagine wrecking and rebuilding a Lamborghini over and over. It may look the same at a glance, but it never is; until all the king's horses and all the king's men finally can't put it together again.

Robinson may have been a thing of beauty, but to be the admired fighting man he was, he took a helluva beating. Like the watch commercial: He took a lickin' but went right on tickin'.

Are you serious, I mean really serious in your comments on this thread?

Because I get the impression your just throwing rocks at a hornets nest for the hell of it, as I cannot fathom someone in their right mind actually believing what you are saying. Mayweather would embarrass Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta? Are you daft or just plain dumb?

Mayweather has not the firepower to make either Ray or Jake respect him, and he sure as hell ain`t gonna be able to keep either man at bay for an entire fight, be it scheduled for ten, twelve or fifteen rounds. What exactly has Mayweather proven at welter so far to make anyone think he can do what you are claiming he would?

That he can defeat the likes of Baldomir by running a marathon all night? Or that he can beat a headcase like Judah who has lost EVERY big fight he has ever been in? Seriously, Mayweather has done **** all to show he is among the immortals of this sport, besides beating some good to decent fighters in lower weight classes and no one of note the last few years besides a completely shot Gatti and an old past his salad days Oscar.

Another thing to consider here is that had Floyd fought the same way he did against Baldomir in Jake or Ray`s era, he would have never gotten a decision as back in those days running did not win you any fights... you had to stand your ground at some point and at least try and make a fight of it otherwise you rsiked being DQed for non-effort.

Mayweather would have been walked down and knocked out by a peak Robinson at welter, unless he fought a completely defensive minded fight which might, just might see him make it to the final bell albeit in a losing cause and a very lopsided decision in Ray`s favour. Against LaMotta I can easily envision Floyd breaking both of his fragile hands on Jake`s cement head if he tried to punch with authority to keep him off of him. And get inside on Floyd LaMotta will, because if a peak Robinson couldn`t keep Jake off him then Floyd sure as hell won`t either.

LaMotta would laugh at anything Floyd threw his direction, and would rip his body to shreds and maul and rough him up him on the inside. And I can only imagine what a beating he would have been in for had he tried to talk that "gangsta ebonics" he spews repeatedly to either Ray or Jake, two men who would not have stood for that kind of talk and would have made hm pay dearly for such direspectful comments.

Mayweather has never fought ANYONE of either Ray`s or Jake`s caliber during his entire career, and to even think that he would have stood a chance against either man is ludicrous. He may impress some folks like you with his running and refusal to fight like a man, but he sure as hell don`t impress me in the least. Hell, even a defensive minded fighter like Pernell Whitaker stood his ground and fought like man once in awhile... Mayweather hasn`t as far as I can remember.

I like all of the Raging B(_)lls's comments except the part about if LaMotta got to Ray he'd certainly get to Floyd. Ray's defense is not as good as Floyd's, unless you are trying to say the best defense is a good offense. Ray had one of the greatest chins ever, and was vulnerable to pressure fighters. That is what makes his fights against them so great. We'll soon see if Floyd share's the same vulnerability.

I'm not saying Floyd stands a chance against either of these guys, by the way. I think they are both way too big for him, even though Ray held a title at 147.

What I meant by that comment was that if Ray could not avoid having to stand his ground against LaMotta at some point in any of their bouts, I don`t see how Floyd will either. I agree Robinson`s defence wasn`t as good as Floyd`s, but my point was that Ray was a very fleetfooted fighter and could move around the ring beautifully and quickly on his toes, but even he could not avoid getting trapped and cornered by LaMotta who exerted so much pressure on him that it was inevitable that he would get to his man eventually and force him to stand and fight.

Now Floyd could move around the ring very effectively as well, but there is not a chance in hell that he is gonna be able to stay out of harm`s way for the duration of the fight and avoid getting cornered by LaMotta at some point. Jake knew how to cut off the ring, he didn`t just follow his opponents around aimlessly like Baldomir did with Mayweather. He is gonna side-step with Floyd and trap and corner him, and when he does get him against them ropes he won`t be going to the head where Floyd can slip and dodge the blows being thrown his way, but instead he will go to the body, and keep going there to take Foyd`s legs away and slow him down as the fight wears on.

    Hope that clears it up.

I see your point. Not saying it is wrong. I just have a different take.

I believe that Ray's defense was not that great because his chin was. I think that is why he was willing to trade with fighters who pressured him.

I do not think that Mayweather's chin is all that great. I'm not calling him china chinned, or anything like that. I am just being realistic. If people are going to question Cotto for being wobbled by Corley, you have to do the same to Floyd. I believe that Floyd's defense is better because he knows, in his mind, that he can't get hit like people with A plus chins can. I'm not saying Mayweather is a wimp, or that he can't take a punch. I'm simply saying he's no Marvin Hagler in the whiskers department.

Ray had the physical means to run, gun, and avoid getting hit. I believe he would stand his ground more ofter because he was not worried about what his opponent's had to offer.

..mayweather always refers to himself in the third person, so I think this is Floyd himself using an assumed name..a doppleganger actually. If this is the pretty one, and he really believes this, his defense is not as good as it looks, because obviously he is brain damaged.

I'm surprised that up to this point no one has mentioned temperment. LaMotta was a mean son-of-a-bich by nature, or so I've read and heard. Bert Sugar and others claim Robsinson used to drink blood during training! Mentally Floyd is just not in the same class with these two. These two guys are from the outer ****ing limits of professional boxing. Floyd is just a spoiled child with some talent. Robinson and LaMotta would both scare the poor little pretty boy half to death. In fact, I think this entire thread is probably a moot point. If Floyd is scared of Cotto, and I do think the Hatton fight is an excuse not to fight him, do you really think he'd get in the ring witth SRR or Jake LaMotta? I don't.

Someone has finally said it. The best defense is a good offense just like the Chicago Bulls when Jordan was around or Tommy Hearns if he had a better chin. I don't think Mayweather will last. He has been wobbled before and he doesn't appear to have an all time great chin either. Nut huggers seem to forget that he is hittable and almost lost to Castillo and De la Hoya. Castillo isn't even that great.

Think the nuthuggers just want attention.

Doppelganger, floyd struggled with castillo and de la hoya. Progress in sports doesnt mean that the best 147 guy of today would beat the best from the fourties......Hell,mayweather hasnt really proved he can beat hatton, cotto or paul williams yet,and yet your saying he could beat 147 srr and 160+ la motta?...You have no analytical skill dufus.....
Completely **** thread by a fanboy troll...
I cant wait for hatton to shut floyds childish little ghetto mouth up,and to shut up forever all his deluded fan boys, when floyd falls he'll fall hard and long like rjj, maybe worse.........Calzaghe has a better claim to p4p fame than floyd, and he could concevably beat the guys you mention due to his size and skills, but floyd? Stop smoking them rocks buddha.....

Not like SRR or LaMotta didn't struggle with anyone (even in their prime). Nobody has an easy time with someone like Floyd, even at 147lb (especially at lower weights). Welterweight Robinson outpointed LaMotta several times, boxing, countering, holding when needed, and other than size and physical strength/power he didn't have any advantages over Mayweather, not in skills at defence or offence, not in cleverness, not in speed, not in chin or heart either.

    No I dont.

While the fight can be competitive and might cause Floyd to dig deep I dont think that Hatton has the refining touches as a pressure fighter that he needs to win. His lack of heavd movment especialy will cost him.

Hope he proves me wrong though.

How would a fight between Mayweather and LaMotta go?
