Pacquiao started at 108lbs, so what? Mayweather is not going to be looking for KO. Fritzie Zivic wasn't really bigger than Floyd. SRR couldn't do any significant damage with his punches to LaMotta when he fought at welterweight limit, he boxed him.

SRR still had the power up his sleeve to keep lamotta a little honest,SRR also had the guts to go toe to toe now and again, punk boy floyd has neither of these,so why should jake respect him at all?
Floyd would never take such a fight, and if he could be forced he would run all night like a dysentry colony and forget to punch...
For ****s sake this man ran and was wary of exchanging with welter carlos baldomir......
Floyd is not even whitakers toenail clippings....
If you said whitaker could outpoint la motta that would be barely feasible, but petty boy?
ps; pac has no relevance to this,he was at an unnatural weight to begin with and very young at 108,floyd is a small welter soaking wet, naturally he is probably 140 max,and he is 30...

In which fight(s) exactly. outside of St. Valentine's, Robinson was able to bother LaMotta with his power? Robinson was much worse at fighting off the ropes than Mayweather, who has made a living off that. He was never a runner like Willie Pep or Ray Leonard, etc. He stands in front of opponent a lot of time, making them miss most of their punches, and even those they land he is rolling with them, minimizing the damage they do. Besides, LaMotta was never a hard puncher.
LaMotta shouldn't have had much respect for Zivic, Robinson, Dauthuille, Hairston, they still outboxed and outfought him.
Why should a clever boxer-puncher exchange, in the first place? Only because they didn't have enough skills to avoid that, guys like Robinson or Charles stood and slugged it out.
I'm not saying Floyd would win this matchup, we should wait and see how he deals with Hatton (who's a lot better technically than LaMotta, although considerably smaller), but if he wins that one impressively, I don't see what LaMotta has in his arsenal to win this one.

What part of the 'power is up the sleeve' do you not understand? Leonard never hurt duran in their first fight but do you think duran didnt repsect the power leonard had? You dont have to wobble or badly hurt someone to get their respect senya....
Why do you think calzaghes opponents repsect his punches? Because he has an 80% one punch ko ratio?
When floyd fought at the lower weights he was more confident of his ability to trade, when he met baldomir at wleter why did he not trade? Baldo couldnt really break an egg and has about 10 kos in his career, yet why did floyd repsect this relatively slow and relatively light punching welter? Its because nearly every boxer knows that a bigger opponent can always have the POTENTIAL shot that can put you into difficulties,if floyd really though baldo was slow and had little power why wouldnt he jump on him like he did manfredo in his early career?
This is why even when guys dont seemingly have the overwhelming power to one punch ko a strong opponent there will be still be that element of respect for that fighter, and we are talking about robinson FFS,not a non puncher like baldo....
If you dont understand what i am talking about,i will leave you to it,but i thought anybody with boxing knowledge knows there are some fighters whose power you cant just ignore, even when they are outboxing you and not trying for the ko....
Look how floyd negatively fought baldo, and then compare a guy two divisions up and good enough to beat and compete well with welter robinson...

Some fighters are simply too well schooled to slug and they were taught how to avoid it without sacrificing offense too much. Roy Jones Jr and Floyd Mayweather Jr are of that kind, they don't slug not because they cannot hurt an opponent, but because they were taught not to forget about defense at any time.

Robinson didn't have enough raw punching power to make LaMotta respect him, and he wasn't schooled well enough to avoid the exchanges, he didn't possess enough technical soundness to defend himself and counter at the same time, while standing flat-footed or when pressed against the ropes.

In St. Valentine's match Robinson was landing almost at will for many rounds, LaMotta didn't even notice those punches and just kept walking forward.

Mayweather won't be trying to use punching power either, but he has the concentration to keep defending himself and countering, round after round, 12 or 15 rounds (unlike Dauthuille).

I will ignore your analysis as it sucks, but how do you think a guy who is barely a welter at age 30 and has lost speed and power going up (robinson was a true welter and was fastest and most powerful at 147.) is going to keep out of the way of a BIG middle with great stamina and a constant menace? Spare me the **** about jones, jones was not well schooled,he just had great reflexes, how come he got knocked out by two ordinary fighters if he was so well schooled? Robinson never got clean cocked like that even as a fourty five year old shell.....

Floyd was a good fighter, but he couldn't even go the distance with SRL for goodness sake, how could he do it with the real mcCoy.

Easy john, senya wont get that kind of racous humour.........
Im still trying to get over senyas thread on roys 'textbook qualities' ,deftly illustrated by the aformentioned poster in the ironic setting of jones tarver 2,where jones allegedly totally schooled tarver with the exception of one 'lucky' punch and ten seconds......

He doesn't have to keep out of the way. Just like Pernell Whitaker, Mayweather can operate by standing flat-footed, and using miscellaneous defensive moves to avoid getting hit with anything solid (and I repeat, that LaMotta was never a big puncher, he had average power at best, probably even below average), while throwing enough clean counters to score points and persuade the judges to give the round to him. LaMotta can even try throwing over a hundred punches per round if he is stupid enough to believe that'll work, because it will not work. Unlike Robinson (who's defense wasn't good enough), Mayweather is technically sound at both defense and offence, and he displayed his great skills of fighting off the ropes many times.

Compare prime Roy Jones Jr with any fighter in history, he gets hit less often than any one, and he doesn't sacrifice his offence doing that. Even guys who were defensive minded, like Willie Pep, got hit more often than prime Roy Jones, and they didn't put up half of his offence at the same time. That's because he was schooled and drilled for literally many years not to sacrifice the defense, he knows every trick from the book and then some, going forward or backwards or fighting flat-footed or off the ropes. Sorry, but Robinson had much-much worse defense than Roy. Compare how many times Jones got hit cleanly even in Tarver and Johnson fight, with how much more often was hit Robinson when just slightly past 30 years old, because he wasn't technically sound in defense.

SRL got hit more often by Floyd Mayweather Sr than Roy Jones was ever hit before 2003. It's not even comparable, how much inferior was Leonard's defense compared to Jones'.
