At a distance he had trouble with Judah, but he closed the gap, and began to batter Judah with searing power shots.

Why? Because Judah needs extension on his punches to land at full power and he cant fight on the inside at all.

Same thing with Mosley. Floyd was able to do what he wanted with Mosley, as he closed that gap and was able to take something off of Mosley's punches.

When Mosley hurt Floyd, he did so with full extension on his right hand. Floyd closed the gap, and all of a sudden Mosley's punches lacked any real authority.

Floyd was also able to counter more quickly because Mosley could not throw a punch and get away from being hit. Mosley would throw, and then eat 2 punches. Why? Because Floyd was close to mosley. (Even Merchant noted this during the fight).

Against Hatton, Floyd fought a gruesome inside fight and bullied Hatton. He did pot shot at times, but the majority of the fight was fought on the inside.

The thing that most people dont realize is that you can BOX on the inside. I'm not saying Floyd would become the second coming of JCC against MAravilla, but he would be close enough to take the edge off of Sergio's shots and counter Sergio who does not really have great defense.

Floyd has done it in the past, when necessary, as I so eloquently pointed out in my examples.

He did that vs. a mentally weak Judah, and Shane who gets gunshy from a mosquito. Different animal altogether with Martinez.

I doubt Sergio is going to be landing a ton of punches on Floyd, same for Floyd on Sergio.. If Sergio takes a round off I don't see him winning the round, as his output and connect rate will already be dropped due to Floyd's defense.. I'm not saying he won't win rounds, but I don't think he'll win any rounds he takes off...

Excellent post and analysis. To be honest I see this fight as a pick em fight. Floyd would have the edge on the inside where he has exceptional defense and would walk Sergio into shots he wouldn't see. Floyd could give Sergio fits from the outside as well because of his reach advantage and speed but I do think Sergio would give Floyd trouble with his speed countering and strength and his somewhat awkward style.
I also think Sergio has underrated ring IQ and would adjust.

I belive with Pacquiao's continueious refusal to fight Mayweather. Ortiz is not prep work for a future Pacquiao bout but a future Martinez bout.
Martinez's size and skills would pose more problemns for Mayweather than he's ever faced. They also make Martinez a more risky oppoent for Mayweather than Pacquiao would. A Pacquiao fight would make more $$ though.
Despite the advantages that Martinez has I don't see any reason to pick him to beat Mayweather at 154. His agresive style is going to work against him as it would for any Mayweather oppoent. He is going to make himself vrouabral to counter shots. Mayweather has proven himself able to adapt or impose his will in all his bouts.
The fight being at 154 rather than 160 gives Mayweather another advantage. It is a lot easier to move up in weight than down espically as you get older Martinez is 36 and will be 37 by May 2012. He has not fought at 154 since 2009.
I think Martinez can make it a ligimitly competive fight, unlike Mayweather/De La Hoya and Castillo I. However I think Mayweather takes it 8-4.

Whether Judah was mentally weak or not, he cannot fight on the inside.

And Shane wasn't too gunshy when he beat the living **** out of Antonio Margarito now was he?

The point is, Sergio does not have good inside fighting skill, Floyd does. So it would make sense for Floyd to close the gap as he would actually take LESS punishment (which you pointed out as being Floyd's primary objective.)

I think if Floyd stays on the outside, he could win rounds, but eventually Sergio's speed and power would come into play, and he can make adjustments.

However it would be MUCH more difficult for Sergio on the inside as that is not really apart of his game. I really think that's where Floyd wins the fight.

It wont look all that great to most, but Floyd will hit Martinez more than MArtinez will hit him and Martinez will lose on points.

Personally, I think Martinez wins a close decision against Mayweather at 154
