Having watched how often Tony nails Louis with that sweeping wide left hook I wondered how he would do against the peek a boo stance of the quick fisted Patterson? Could Floyd evade it, and box his way to victory,or maybe force a stoppage on cuts with his rapid combinations? Or has Tony a reasonable chance of landing his money punch and dropping Floyd ,perhaps for the ten count? What do you think?
I'm not saying he'd beat Patterson, but if I was Floyd's advisor. I'd say it's probably in Floyd's interests to avoid him. Looking at how many thudding clean right hands he absorbed from Joe Louis and kept coming, with vicious bad intentions, he's going to be a stubborn obstacle for Patterson. Yes, it could be a bloodbath. Yes, Patterson would probably hit the deck. I guess a lot depends on how squeamish the referee and audience are because i get the impression Galento couldn't give two f--ks about the blood streaming down his fat face. A tough fight for Patterson, but one he has all the tools to win.
Floyd might go down early on, but he'd get up a go on to a decision victory...decking Galento in return along the way.
This is how I see it. Patterson could probably win using the tactics that he used against Chuvalo, but the smart thing would be not to take this fight unless he had to!
Patterson should be the favorite, and when Two-Ton called him a "bum", would just look at Tony with that sheepish smile. Patterson, overall the much better fighter, but Galento has the one-punch power to TKO Floyd, or to turn the fight into something real dirty and nasty, which Floyd never fought that way. Patterson by decision after being down once in the fight.
Patterson was a much better technical fighter with more skills. He won close decisions over such fighters as Chuvalo and Bonavena and should win over Galento. That said, Two-Ton Tony was always dangerous and capable of absorbing incredible punishment. His best chance would be to try to pull Patterson into a slugfest with him where he might be able to pull off a Lou Nova style beating. If Patterson doesn't take the bait, or try to fight Galento like he did Liston, he should win a close decision, which would be my prediction.
The punches that Louis took would have iced Patterson in my humble opinion. Patterson would have to plan the fight around not taking punches like that!
Your observation lacks specificity! Perhaps the ultimate short straw is having Galento in your ea. You will get limited credit for beating him, but he will encroach on the rankings. Then Patterson either fights this fat man, or ducks him!
Here you go: Patterson beats him to the punch again and again, peppering his rotund opponent with hard power punches at will. The punches show on Galento's face as he begins to maul (and foul) Patterson with increasing bitterness and frustration. The only solid punches Galento lands are rabbit punches or short punches to Patterson's ribs, both delivered while in the clinch. Eventually Galento is either disqualified or so grotesquely disfigured from eating flush hooks that his corner stops it.
That hook that knocked Louis down was a beautiful punch. Galento was a highly feared puncher in his time. Very dangerous, tough, rough and dirty. Certainly Floyd was the much more skilled fighter but one single blow from Tony could turn the fight around at any moment. Floyds best punch was his hook but it would be suicide to hook with Galento. It would be interesting to see what game plan Pattrrson would use in this fight.
Patterson would win on cuts imo. But he would need to earn his respect in the first round or we could see a repeat of Liston.
