Floyd Patterson, 1958 defends his title against 1941 Billy Conn, 15 Rounds. Could have Billy pulled off an upset? Or would Floyd have too much power and speed?
This is a brilliant thought u have Richard. I choose Patterson over Conn 4 two reasons 1) Patterson, though not a large heavyweight is a heavyweight, and an extremely hard-hitting one, which is not a problem 4 Conn if he can stay away from Patterson and box. 2) There's a problem w/ that. Unlike Louis who was more of a stalker and less of a mover, Patterson is extremely fast of both hand and foot. Conn is up against a bigger man and a bigger puncher, and it's one who's going to give him a lot of trouble on his own level of boxing skill. Patterson KO 7. Actually pretty one-sided imo.
Styles make fights, Louis would stop Patterson earlier than he stopped Conn, Patterson stops Conn earlier than Louis did. Reasons? I see Patterson responding to Louis the same way he responded to Liston. that could be even deadlier (If even possible) for him with Louis's superior hand speed and accuracy. However, Patterson's foot speed would make it easier to track a fighter like Conn, also his hand speed and power would enable him to reach Conn earlier, Conn wouldn't be able to use angles as effectively against Patterson. also, Conn is not going to intimidate Patterson He'd face a confident version of him. A confident Patterson should ko Conn in 10rds or less.
I think this is correct, although even for his time Patterson was not an extremeluy hard hitting HW. Fairly hard, & extremely fast for a HW is about right.
Conn would be hunted down and slaughtered in the corner, dropped like a sack of potatoes and carried away to an insane asylum where he would live out the rest of his days talking about the time that he almost lifted the greatest title of them all off the hands of the viscous Floyd Patterson. the victory would be nice for Floyd, but he would never get full credit or respect for it because of the size difference. later in life he would feel sorry for Conn and visit him in the insane asylum and they would become friends. Floyd would even let Conn borrow his championship belt and Conn would eventually believe that he had indeed been the heavyweight champion of the world. a beautiful tale of triumph and friendship in the darkest of places
Great story! I would have them both end up in the same old age home. Only flaw-"vicous" typo, ha! And there is not much of a size difference between these guys. So maybe say in retrospect he lost respect due to beating up a crazy man....
