Harry Markson, the Director of Boxing at Madison Square Garden bent over
    backwards for Floyd.

He offered Floyd 35% of the 'live gate', plus a percentage of the Televsion rights.

Cleveland Williams and his Manager- Hugh Benbow agreed to take less, just to get
    Floyd in the ring.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Cassius Clay had got gut shot and had a partially paralyzed leg, and had to fight Sonny Liston?

Now that would have been a fair fight.

    May 1964

When Floyd Patterson 'pulled the Houdini Act', that left the other '4' fighters in limbo.

Sweden Boxing Promoter - Edwin Ahlquist convinced both Floyd and Eddie Machen to fight in Stockholm
    for a 12-Round bout on July 5, 1964.

While Floyd and Eddie signed contracts in May 1964 -

Doug Jones took an easy bout on May 16, 1964 - versus Leroy Green (21-16-3) in Kingston, Jamaica.

Ernie Terrell had a bout set-up for June 17, 1964 - versus Jefferson Davis (20-5-1) in Miami Beach, Florida.

Cleveland Williams took a bout on July 21, 1964 - versus Sonny Banks (18-5-0) for Houston, Texas.

Cleveland Williams was second to Sonny Liston in size, strength and power..... Cus and Floyd knew not to **** with either Cleve or Sonny in 1959, 1960 or 1961..... Floyd was just too small and fragile for them monsters...

    Do your homework.

NYSAC did not recognize Sonny Liston as a Champion, and therefore
did not recognize the February 1964 bout between Sonny Liston and
    Cassius Clay.

In March 1964 - Harry Markson, the Director of Boxing for Madison Square
Garden put together a 5-man Heavyweight Tournament.

Cleveland Williams would've been champ in the early 60s had Liston and Clay not been there

What is that on Floyd's t-shirt?

    justboxing.net? An internet address?

    Can't be. :huh

How old is that photo? Rotary phone. Looks like it is out of the '60s to me.

35% was pretty sweet back then for a non-champion.

IIRC, back then Markson and MSG normally gave 40% to the champion and 20% to the challenger in true championship fights.

However, I don't blame Floyd at all for staying in Sweden. He didn't need to mess with Big Cat.

Ali couldn't put any fear into anyone.....he couldn't even frighten a liquor store salesman Chuck Wepner.

Patterson knew he was going to lose against Liston and slipped out of the dressing room....or bought a beard disguise.

Williams would have bounced Floyd off the canvas multiple times and TKO'ed him.

    Ali might've scared Liston?

But he was more the type of dude to amp you up and annoy you to the point you can't wait to get in the ring wit him, only for him to make you look like a fool while taunting and beating you up.

What did Williams do that makes people think he is a world beater? He was a decent enough (fringe) contender. Not better than someone like Neusel, LaStarza or Maskaev.
