Its a hard sell, but think about it. After the Martin fight, Liston was going into nosedive. Just look how far and fast Tyson declined fter the Lewis fight. Patterson was still beating ranked contenders, and time was on is side. Never say never!
But a third Floyd/Sonny in 68-69-70 would not have been a definitive third scrap. Sonny? demons, demons! Floyd? Still viable. I'm a huge Patterson fan but a Floyd victory in 69 wouldn't have made any statement. It would have almost been different eras at that point.
After the bout with Santo Amonti. Floyd did state the following, A) It was a step in the right direction, and the fans in Sweden were fantastic. B) He wanted another chance at Liston, but he was realistic and said he did not deserve one at this time C) He was willing to put in the hard work, and prove to boxing pundits that he could earn his way back into contention with 5 or 6 wins. Floyd was supposed to fight Sonny Liston sparring partner, New England Heavyweight Willie Ray Richardson 15-2-1 (10 KO's) next, but there was concern about Richardson's power.
Hey Senor! Patterson's always said his ''I'm not worthy" bulls**t" He schooled Machen less than 6 months later. He would have put, who is this guy? Willie Ray Richardson on frigging ***** street!
No doubt, Floyd should not have had a problem with Willie Ray Rirchardson, but Willie's left hook would have made Floyd a bit cautious for a few rounds. Willie would have went 'balls out' in the first few rounds, with a 'nothing to lose' attitude, always making that kind of fighter dangerous. Willie Ray, 24 years old, at 6' 1" 190 lbs......... Young, fast, hungry and hit hard.
