Both guys lost devastating 1st round knockouts (Patterson 2x) to 2 of the most fearsome heavyweights in history. Both were petrified. However, when watching both fights back, whereas as Spinks fought a scared fight -Patterson didn't fight. He took the fight to Liston both times that he fought him. It didn't make a difference, but he atleast went out swinging.

Spinks didn't get the chance to fight any type of fight.. He went out of the ring as fast as he went into it

I don't know, not sure a lot of difference between the two losing.
Tyson was a lot faster, it was like being in the eye of the storm when he came at you in his prime.
Tyson was pumped up for that fight, poor Spinks never stood a chance to even make a fight of it.

Just occurred to me what a short, one sided fight Tyson vs Patterson would be.

Spinks hadn't been in the ring in over a year too.

Byrd would have done better than either Spinks or Patterson. One does not bravely fight the big guys.

Spinks looked like he wanted the fight to end as soon as possible, after the first knockdown, he literally went to exchange Tyson and he got crushed 2 second later.

Spinks threw like a dozen right leads in 91 seconds. It was clearly part of the game plan Eddie Futch had worked out.

Still not sure what the thinking was — maybe hope to tag Tyson once and at least get his respect? Or just a belief that Iron Mike was vulnerable to that shot? Make him think about throwing the hook? Or set up something else?

Consider he was also on the canvas for more than 10 seconds (took a knee plus the end) of that 91 seconds and I don’t see how anyone could say he didn’t try — that’s a lot of right leads in just over a minute of ring time.

Spinks came to fight, he just got outfought. Here's a nice breakdown of the 91 second massacre.

He definitely tried. I just pointed out that he fought a scared fight.

I've seen this. Good breakdown. Spinks tried to land his right hand lead several times but was never confident when punching & would pull back immediately after throwing it.

Spinks knew Tyson was a tremendous counterpuncher but Futch wanted him to get off first as to not show fear.

I think Patterson showed guts in the first fight. In the rematch he looked like a guy who was pretty resigned to losing.

IMHO, Patterson basically fought Liston in the style that he was used to fighting in. Spinks did the same, for him. for as long as it lasted.
