Hi griff. I grew up with boxing as my favorite sport and with Floyd as my favorite fighter but with the multiple titles, multiple contenders, multiple wt. classes, and a lot of modern fighter's arrogance and disrespect for opponents I've pretty much blown off the sport since about '95, save for the occasional BIG bout... This classic forum is the ONLY one I visit here. I have about 50 hours of classic bouts anywhere from 1915-1985 (majority of them are the 40's thru the 70's) You make a good point but IMHO you can't truely objectively match fighters up against each other in different eras as much as I would like to. A 2000 Floyd or a 1950 Vlad, or a 1990 Dempsey or a 1970 Johnson, etc.. etc...etc... Again IMHO, its better to look at the 'style' matchups which have always elavated boxing to a level higher than virtually any other sport over the years. A fighter than came to mind is Jimmy Young (who I've always loved). Let's look at styles. Would always give an Ali trouble. Although I think the pre-Ali Foreman would have nailed Jimmy, he would always be slipping and sliding. Lyle and Norton's worst nightmare is trying to get thru Jimmy. A matchup with Sonny might have resulted in an ending similar to Machen's scrap in 1960. Plug in some other big banging HW champs and Jimmy may have been able to, at least, hang with them. BUT....little Floyd MAY have been able to KO Young on styles alone... My $0.02
