I just had the great plessure of watching the third Patterson-Johansson fight again. Both fighters are underrated and their fights deserve to be mentioned among the best in heavyweight history. Sure, Patterson and Johannsson were small by modern standards. But they fought their guts out in their highly entertaining trilogy - and then - weight means nothing
In this - their last fight from 1961 - Johansson has the upper hand hurting Patterson with everything he throws. But out of shape, he is tired and hunting Patterson for a finish in the sixth - when Patterson fires back and sends Johansson to the floor. The Swede follows the count and gets up at 9 - but is declared the loser. Not a big scandal - but how lucky Patterson was. He was losing the fight and only his good luck and Johanssons bad shape saved him from losing.

Yes, Floyd was sleep walking some in that 3rd fight...he was nowhere near as focused and prepared as he was in that epic rematch...of course that performance was a hard act to follow. Compared to his shape in the first bout, Ingo was a pasty slob, yet he still had that "Toonder" in the right...but that was all he had.

In addition to his "luck" he showed considerable speed and durability.

It was a right just behind the ear that did the trick for Floyd.

Ingo liked the party life he was visibly not in great shape for that third fight . That falls on him though. Had he been dedicated he may have won the trilogy.

He took training lightly and it was a terrible mistake. He wanted to fight differently in the third fight, staying flatfooted in order to gain more power. Sparring partners confirmed that it worked and he may have gained false confidence from their feedback. It is a paradox - cause as reigning champ he spoke of the importance of conditioning and foresaw that he would keep an athletic profile even after retirement.

I've wondered why being so ko'd cold and outgunned from the start of their 2nd bout that Ingo took his training so lightly for their 3rd meeting but from all reports he did. He may simply have lost the drive needed to get ready for a fight or thought his bingo would be enough by itself.

If Johansson had won that third fight, Liston would never have been champion.
Ingo avoided Liston at all costs.

That experience in fight #2 ruined him mentally.

Have you seen his wife?? If you were married to her youd spend more time in bed than doing roadwork too.

Excellent point. He got a liking for the horisontial position - but when Patterson send him down in their rematch - as a Champ he was filming in Hollywood and he spend lunch hours as a popular visitor to famous actresses. I haven“t seen his Hollywood record list - he never bragged about his adventures - but years later his (then ex-)wife gave a few hints in interviews.

Ingo looked just awesome vs Machen and the 1st time vs Patterson, but The Left Hook in the rematch in '60 just ruined him.

Thats nonsense... Ingo never ducked Liston. After he lost the third bout with Patterson he decided to get the European title back therfore no more fights in the US. A bout with Liston was later planned but after a lousy effort against Brian London , Ingo wisely decided to retire admitting he didnt have enough left to compete.

Reminds me of a quote I read about the fight. "His preparations were more horizontal the vertical for the fight."
