today is the day that the great floyd patterson passed away in 2006...one of my favourites heavyweight champs....here's an online pal of mine, Seymour, and his memories of him and seeing him fight live... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFQDtQgeOUE[/ame]
I knew there was a reason this day 6 years ago was one of the suckiest days ever - hated hearing that news that day - one of the greatest men ever in boxing Floyd - and a scintillating fighter to boot - and Ali also called him the 'most skilled boxer' he ever faced - RIP champ (and happy birthday to SUZYQ howa Boston today?)
Nice touch:good RIP champ, you were always a class act Can i add a story involving Patterson? There was a club my father and his friends used to frequent back in the 70s/early 80s that was pretty strict on a dress code. Nothing fancy, just no jeans allowed (to stop guys coming in from the sites with dirty jeans). Well this time my da's pal was choking for a pint and they all went to this club but he was wearing jeans. A commitee member objected to him wearing denims and asked him to leave so he went home and got changed. When he came back for a drink the place was in one hell of a buzz cos the great floyd patterson came in with a friend who frequented the bar and he had coaxed Floyd to come down and say hello to the locals. Now Floyd was wearing denims and dads friend actually took offence that he was asked to go home and change whilst Floyd was left alone (unreal isnt it?). He approached the commitee guy and asked why he was pulled up and why Floyd wasnt put out, to which the guy replied, "You want him out? You put him out."
good story he was a gent, very quiet and shy by all accounts....i met him briefly in dublin when lennox lewis was boxing an aussie called ****** fortune
I was at that fight too, in the Point. Drove home the next day to complete madness and riots when Lee Clegg got released from jail
