    Another Patterson thread for y'all.

This would be an interesting contest. I dont rate Cooney much as a fighter but he had some real power and he used to come out quite aggressively, he was dangerous for a few rounds.

What would Floyd do with him ?

Prime Cooney connects with his big hook a few times and the fights over, I'd say.

Spinks pulled it off, but he was much more comfortable at higher weights than Floyd and Cooney was a bit past his best there.

Not to mention Cooney was past it vs. Spinks.

Cooney was too big, and too powerful for Patterson. He would knock him out within 5 rounds.

I miss Sonny’s jab. Great poster who disappeared over 12 years ago.... To address this very old thread I would favor Cooney. As great as Patterson was he’s to outmatched physically

I would pick the more proven man in Patterson.

It would not be a very confident pick, but I would see it as the lest bad one.

This. Patterson puts Cooney on his back. Cooney had the size advantage, but I don’t see him having the skill to take advantage of it against Patterson. Just like a Spinks was landing on Conney at will Patterson would do the same. Patterson’s handspeed and timing are all wrong for Cooney.

I tentatively pick Floyd. Much more proven. However, Cooney has the punching power to pull an Ingo on Patterson.

I'd pick Floyd to knock Cooney out. Cooney has the power and size to pull it off, but Floyd's speed and skill advantage is significant enough for me to make him a favourite here. Plus Cooney didn't have a great chin and Floyd was no slouch in the power department himself.

Patterson some time after six. TBH, there's a good amount of Patterson's opponents I'd pick to beat Cooney.

Ingo, Quarry, Bonavena, Chuvalo and Moore would beat Cooney IMO. Although maybe not that version of Moore, he looked very listless and nowhere near as good as he looked vs Rocky.

Big Ger would skin this rabbit within 4-5 rounds.

Yeah I normally favor the man with the better resume and Patterson is certainly a fighter who I highly respect. But he’s also the type of guy who could have lost to a lot of men who’s credentials were inferior. He was small for a heavyweight. He had a shaky chin. And his style was hit or miss in terms of who it worked on....

Gerry Cooney had his limitations. His defense was average and his chin weak. His mental fortitude lacked as well. But I’m not sure Patterson would last long enough to make these weaknesses come into play. He had the type of style which would have made him very hittable for those Cooney lefts to the body and head. And of course we’re talking about him facing Gerry when he was still an active fighting contender and not the one who fought Spinks and didn’t even train

The best version of Patterson would take Cooney out inside 5 rounds.

It's natural to think Cooney by power and there's a good chance it ends early. I'd like to think Floyd could box his way thru the early stages and then take those fast hands to Cooney.
