I think it’s a case of whoever lands first

Floyd Patterson had better balance, speed, and and defense, while Gerry Cooney lacked balance, speed, and defense. Like I have posted, Gerry's best wins were over two aged escapees from a nursing home in Ken Norton and Jimmy Young. Floyd has fought big hitters such as George Chuvalo, Henry Cooper, and Oscar Bonavena, but was kayoed by Ingemar Johannson, then Sonny Liston. Both of his kayo losses were to fighters that were proven contenders that fought opponents that were too young to receive Social Security. Floyd would out speed Gerry, landing quick combinations, using his peek a boo defense as Cooney would be tripping over his feet, while he missed with his his wild blows. Floyd wins this one on points, unanimous decision. Gerry is a nice enough fellow who should have taken up a different career, but boxing is not one of them.

Patterson as the much much more proven fighter deserves the respect he earned and as such should be the favourite, I don’t doubt Cooneys power to dent Floyd I just doubt his ability to land and his own whiskers.

Floyd by decision, or late stoppage. Cooney didn't have enough experience to really deal with guys like Floyd.
