Agreed. The dude is a 6’6” 240 lb monster with a cannon of a punch and he’s being matched against a 6’0” 182 lb guy who was albeit a great fighter but highly knockdown prone. People are also talking like Joshua is some big shlt head with no skill. It seems to be forgotten that Ingemar Johansson was no sweet scientist and didn’t have anywhere near the physical advantages that Joshua has. How about the time Patterson was down against a debuting fighter ? Had that been wiped off the history books too ?
Johansson was no skillled master and nor was he 6’6” 240 lbs with Joshua’s power. He destroyed Patterson in the first fight and had him down twice in the first round in their rubber match. Pete Rademacher was a debuting fighter who decked Patterson. In either case this match would never happen being Cus D’Amato would never allow it
Look, fans get 'out of line' so to speak, when comparing former champs to today's 245-270 pound mammouth heavy champs. Times has evolved and NO WAY does a 1950, 188 pound man beat today's big men. If that was the case, todays elite lightheavyweights/small cruisers, would beat out the superheavies of today. That isn't the case. People are just sympathy blinded when comparing former greats to present big men. I would love the thought of a Patterson, a Walcott or a Frazier beat AJ or Fury, but it is just not realistic.
And the evolution of time into today’s freak show is why I have little interest in present-day heavyweight boxing … although seeing Wilder exposed was hilarious … and come here to discuss the past.
Compared to Joshua I’d argue Johansson was very skilled. He had a better jab, footwork, put his punches together better, and had twice as much amateur experience. Also, Joshua’s size would most likely be a disadvantage against Patterson. Joshua would need to come in under 240 lbs, since at 240+ Joshua would be too slow to deal with Patterson’s mobility and handspeed. Rademacher also had way more amateur experience than Joshua and like Johansson was a more polished fighter than Joshua. Despite professional boxing being something he did on the side Rademacher was still able to beat some good fighters just off his vast experience amateur experience. Also Patterson fought everybody, so Patterson wouldn’t be afraid of fighting Joshua. Cus’ was no different from any great fight handler in that he’d look for the easiest and biggest payday for his fighter. That said Cus’ had no problem with Patterson fighting Liston or any other fighter provided Patterson got the bulk of the money, controlled all the fight conditions, and Patterson and Cus’ got a piece of them for several years. Once Liston agreed to all of Patterson’s conditions he immediately got the fight and the rest is history. Guys like Wlad, Mayweather, and even Joshua himself have all attempted to put similar demands on their opponents before giving them a shot.
Sir, please, how would AJ's size be a disadvantage vs Patterson?? Does that mean, that a shrinked version of AJ would stand a better chance?? Lol. Please, I have never heard anything more laughable, sorry.
This sentence pretty much discredits your post sorry. Patterson is widely acknowledged to be one of if not THEE most protected champions of all time. And to try and make an effort to build up Rademacher as a better fighter than Joshua by comparing their amateur careers is not much of a rebuttal.
I agree. Had this been a p4p fight I’d favor Patterson but he’s facing someone about 40-50 pounds heavier and a half foot taller, who’s reasonably skilled and very powerful. I don’t think this ends well for him. That being said, Patterson is my third favorite fighter so I’m obligated to vote for him.
I don’t blame you. I love Patterson too which is why I hate picking Joshua to beat him. But some of these guys aren’t realistic.
Joshua (Boxer Puncher) vs Patterson (boxer/inside fighter) Power: Joshua Hand Speed: Patterson Chin: Joshua Stamina: Patterson Defense: Patterson Body punching: Joshua Technique: Patterson Ring IQ: Patterson Heart: Joshua Experience: Patterson On paper, Patterson should win due to his multiple advantages. The problem is he had a weak chin and is giving up 30-50 lbs depending on what weight Joshua enters the ring. In addition to the enormous size difference and chin issues, Joshua can keep him at the end of a strong jab and frame or push him back. It's really a bad matchup unless Patterson can make it a close range fight and can make it past the 5th round to attempt to drag Joshua into deep waters. I would say that the most likely result is Joshua wins by KO within 4-6 rounds unless he's just really sloppy/befuddled by the hand speed and allows Patterson to get inside and outwork him. I don't rule out the possibility of Patterson catching Joshua with something big and turning things around, but Joshua recovered from big hooks and uppers from Ruiz, Whyte, etc and got off the floor to win again Wladmir so I wouldn't count on that. Call me crazy, but I think Povetkin is comparable in style and skill to Patterson except even bigger so that could be a good idea on how the fight would go.
I think you shortchanged Patterson when you gave Joshua the nod for "heart". Floyd, with his record of fighting bigger opponents, needn't take a back seat to anyone in that category. The man rose from the canvas to whip a lot of guys. He never quit and was never out of shape. He gave his heart and soul to boxing and fought 20 years as a top pro. You should reconsider.
There has not been, is not, and never will be a point in the history of human combat where having an extra 50lbs to 70lbs of lean muscle mass over your opponent is a disadvantage. What are you talking about? Seriously guys what are we doin? This is an insult to Floyd Patterson if anything.
