I don’t think Patterson can stay away nor have much success on the front foot, because of the styles, Lyle is bound to land eventually, Patterson didn’t have a terrible defence, but it was passive, he wasn’t the best on the backfoot, I think Lyle outmuscles him on the inside and when Patterson runs, Lyle is able to force him to engage which favours Patterson, Lyle can take Patterson’s power, but not the other way around, Patterson isn’t slick enough to stay away, and he isn’t physical nor powerful enough to get the better of Lyle on the inside.
Patterson might do a Morrison-Mercer on him for a few rounds, but Lyle will catch him.

If he avoids getting caught in the first two or three rounds Patterson will utterly embarrass him.

I’ve spoken my piece about this, Patterson is a top 25 ATG and historically elite and Lyle is top 50 maybe and not historically elite, but this thread will soon be populated by people putting Lyle on his usual pedestal around here.

That's it, lesser fighters beat Lyle

Patterson befuddles and outboxes Lyle if the likes of Quarry and Young can beat Lyle via shut out then so can Patterson.

Floyd comprehensively outboxes Ron over the distance but has to pick himself up off the canvas once or twice.

While I’d pick prime Patterson to beat Quarry and he may beat Young prime for prime also, there’s a stylistic component to their matchups with Lyle.
Young had a great jab and was great at baiting opponents whilst he was on the backfoot, he could move better than Patterson and was more tricky.
Quarry was also perfectly matched against styles like Lyle, he was great at countering in mid range then pulling away to avoid the return.
Patterson wasn’t great at stepping away and pulling back to avoid returns, nor was he tricky on the backfoot, he’d be forced to rely on keeping the hands up to defend and he’d be forced to engage and stay in the pocket at times.

You make valid points but I would argue this … Floyd Patterson was a technically better fighter from age 33 to 37 than he was as a young champion. I think he could handle it and Lyle especially in that time frame.

    Patterson for me.

Hits faster, harder and more accurately than Lyle
