Watching Ali/Patterson 2 and Ali was 6'3 218 pounds and Patterson was 6'0 188 pounds and held his own. Yes Ali stopped him (and it was a corner stoppage from the referee while Patterson was walkingout to continue), but Patterson did good, especially to be at a 30 pound weight disadvantage. And despite being 37, Ali was one of the only few in the division who could beat Patterson like that. So..... how could Patterson do vs the 205-208 pound Evander Holyfield of 1991?
It’s a fight that would be fought almost entirely inside and Patterson would take the brunt of the exchanges. Holyfield by TKO mid rounds
The longer this goes the better chance there is of Patterson, who doesn’t get the respect he deserves here, winning a decision.
If Patterson chin was better, I can see him winning, but Holyfield had respectable heavyweight punching power and he was accurate and punched in combinations. I can see him stopping Patterson late via TKO with a knockdown somewhere along the way. But Patterson could rock Holyfield a time or 2.
I’ve said this before here … IMO Patterson became a better fighter after he was champion and as he got older.
I mean, Patterson could win a decision. It's not entirely out of the question. But I suspect that if he did, it would be a split decision.
He became a lot more resilient, and a lot less protected. The older and wiser Patterson was a lot better than the young one, and no less hungry.
