It's one thing to say that Patterson would win, but calling it a missmatch is ridiculous. Patterson lost to lesser fighters than Sharkey in his prime.

    Who are these lesser fighters?

Ingo, Ellis and Quarry (I know that Quarry loss is disputed but still).

I wouldn't categorize them as "lesser fighters" than Jack Sharkey. I'd say that at least they were equivalent.

And by the way, I think Patterson was robbed in both the Ellis and Quarry fights.

At least equivalent? I don't see that.

Well why would you call them lesser fighters than Sharkey?

Because they didn't have as good wins and weren't as good the highest level. They also didn't look as good on film as Sharkey.

Compare Sharkey's resume to Ingo for example - Ingo had only two losses but he faced very few top contenders. Sharkey fought top contenders for almost half of his career.

I favour Patterson because he had a good style to beat boxers and Sharkey lacks the one shot power of Liston or Ingo to take him out. It would be competitive though.

Sharkey also seems to have struggled, when somebody fought him on the inside.

Not saying that Patterson would necessarily do this, but he would have options for sure!

We don't have this fight of course, but he handled Wills quite well and Wills was mostly an inside fighter (much bigger than Patterson too).

I am not sure that I would categorize Wills as an inside fighter. He liked a cuddle for sure, but he seems to have done most of his work on the outside.

Dempsey rated Sharkey's inside work , if I recall correctly.

As you will have seen from our debate in the top five wins thread, Risko basically beat Sharkey by keeping it on the inside.

That was Risko's game, give him credit!

Even if Sharkey may have had a better resume, in the ring, Ingo, Ellis and Quarry may have been able to beat a peak Sharkey. It's definitely not a given that he'd beat any 3 of them
