Interesting fight. Toney didn't typically want any part of a fighter that was faster than him in the upper weight classes and Floyd most definitely was faster. With that said, Toney was an excellent counter puncher and Floyd was sometimes over aggressive and found himself getting caught. Like I said, interesting fight but one that I would favor Floyd in. I like his speed and combination punching to carry him to a decision win.
On a side note, it’s strange to think that the former HW champion in this match up is the naturally smaller man despite being matched with a MW champion- Just thought that was interesting.
Patterson would dominate. Surely Toney will land some counterpunches to win some rounds but Patterson would win a huge win on the cards.
I think Toney would nip a close decision. Perhaps I am conflating an older Floyd but I just feel like he was not as active a fighter as I would like to remember him as. Even if the Chuvalo version shows up I still see him coming up just short to Toney. A good scrap and I hope I am not selling Floyd short, as I am one who thinks he gets sold short here in H2H’s sometimes. But if he does not bring more than he did against Quarry/Ellis in close loses and a draw, where my memory is he was not active enough to convincingly win those decisions IMO. I see Toney nipping this one.
On the face of it, a really interesting match. I actually wish it had occurred to me. Two big Middleweights. The thing is, Floyd's whole Championship and virtually all his top ten career, ( Which, when you look at it is astonishing in its longevity and quality), is at Heavyweight whereas Toney just ate his way into the division. This will be one of those fights that we look forward to right up to the first bell. Then we realise that sometimes things are just as simple as they seem on the surface. Toney simply has nothing that Floyd hasn't seen before, not even his power. Give Toney his due, he never squealed when he had to take it. Brave fellow. He'd be there in the last round, grinning, mugging it up and telling Patterson, "Weren't nothin'" but James is a swollen, bloody mess who has lost every round after the fourth. You had to be very good to beat Floyd Patterson.
Patterson tattoos the national anthem into Toney. Toney was good against slower heavies where his skills and defence could really shine. Floyd is going to outclass Toney through sheer speed. Nightmare for James. I always like referring to the footage in these matchups. Compare the following two clips: This content is protected This content is protected The guys in Toney's clip are moving in slow motion compared to Patterson. Evander Oldfield looks like a mummy. What I will say for Toney is that he was pretty damn tough and knew how to pick his moments. His best chance is to ride the storm and try to counter Patterson or catch him coming in. It's possible I guess but I wouldnt bet on it.
i ll pick floyd by SD.toney would definitely win some rounds and give floyd a tough time.but i think floyds pressure ,speed and higher work rate would win fight for him.
