Floyd Patterson vs Jerry Quarry, June 10 1967, Did Quarry win? What do you think of the scoring? It was not a fight that was part of the WBA Tournament.

Floyd Patterson 194 lbs drew with Jerry Quarry 193 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10
"In a stunning decision which caught the crowd of some 20,000 by surprise, Jerry Quarry, 193, was voted a draw with Floyd Patterson, 194, Friday night at the Coliseum. Young Jerry opened fast winning the first round. Midway through the second round Quarry found the opening he had been waiting for and ripped home a left hook that dropped Floyd. Quarry was on Floyd like a tiger and sent Patterson tumbling to the canvas again with a right hand to the chin. From there on it was Patterson's fight and gave Jerry a severe pounding. Quarry was bleeding from the nose, mouth and a cut over the right eye from the 4th round on. Quarry looked as if he might start a rally halfway through the 7th round but Patterson offset this when he dropped an offbalance Quarry with a left hook high on the chest. Quarry came on in the 9th, shaking up Patterson with a right to the head and following up with a terrific left hook to the body, but Patterson opened the last round with a solid left hook to the chin and ripped Quarry's body with another left hook and seemingly won the fight only to have the officials see it otherwise." -Long Beach Independent Press-Telegram

    Unofficial scorecards
    • AP - 8-5 Patterson
    • UPI - 5-3 Patterson
    • LB Press-Telegram - Two writers covered the fight, Dave Lewis and Dave Taylor, who scored it 7-5 and 7-4 respectively for Patterson

This was how I saw it, scored under California rules of 1 point for a round, 2 points if a knockdown is involved and no points for an even round. A very close fight.

    Patterson-Quarry I

    Round 1: Even-no points
    Round 2: Quarry (2 knockdowns) 3 points
    Round 3: Patterson
    Round 4: Patterson
    Round 5: Patterson
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Patterson (1 knockdown) 2 points
    Round 8: Patterson
    Round 9: Quarry
    Round 10: Quarry

    Patterson 6-5

This fight was very controversial, this led to a rematch on Oct 28 1967, in which Jerry Quarry won a majority decision over Floyd Patterson as part of the WBA Tournament. Jerry would move on to Feb 3 1968, at which time he stopped Thad Spencer in round 12. He would lose a split decision to Jimmy Ellis on April 27 1968 for the WBA Title.

Quarry fought well at times, but mostly had the **** beat of him that night. However, I would have to go back and do the scoring, but I remember that Floyd won almost every round after the 2nd. This was probably one of Floyd's greatest performances for being decked twice in the second and then springing into action and giving the young buck hell.

Swag, I'll have to disagree there, as I had it a pretty close fight, but a Quarry win. But I can also see someone leaning Patterson's direction. I just think it was a good, close fight.

    Round 2: Quarry (1 knockdown) 2 points
    Round 3: Quarry
    Round 4: Quarry (1 knockdown) 2 points

Floyd Patterson 196 lbs lost to Jerry Quarry 195 lbs by MD in round 12 of 12

"Youthful Jerry Quarry scored an unpopular, 12 round majority decision over former champion Floyd Patterson Saturday and advanced to the semifinals of the WBA's tournament to find a successor to deposed titleholder Cassius Clay. The hard-punching 22 year old Quarry, 193, dropped Patterson, 32, with short rights to the head in the 2nd and 4th rounds. But he had to battle to hold his own in the late rounds as Patterson, 195, appeared to get stronger and take charge of the fiercely contested bout." -United Press International

Was Floyd ever lucky with a decision?

He had three controversial ones go against him (Quarry x 2 and Ellis). If he had won those fights, he'd probably faced off against Frazier in 1970.

I'm with you Scar, I always thought Quarry deserved the decision he got. It was close, and I would have been satisfied w/ a draw, or a decision for Patterson, but Quarry scored all the KD's and I thought Floyd was not effectively aggressive enough until later in the fight, where I saw it as too late.

I think Quarry got the hometown favours in both his fight with Patterson.

Patterson deserved a win in 1st one, and no worse than a draw in 2nd.

Bokaj, you bring up a great point. Did Floyd ever get a close decision? A look at his record, I came up with three.

-Hurricane Jackson I - In their first fight Floyd won a split decision. Everything I read on this fight suggests Floyd hammered Tommy, and all media and 2 officials agreed. But there was one official that actually scored for Tommy, which made it appear that it may have been close. I never saw the fight but it doesn't appear to be any doubt that Floyd gave Tommy a going over.

-George Chuvalo - in a great blend of styles and probably George's best fight ever, Floyd won a close but unanimous decision. I have watched some of the fight but the fight is not in its entirety. One wire source called the fight a draw but for the most part, Floyd won a good, close decision that should not be in dispute with anyone outside the Chuvalo camp.

-Oscar Bonavena - Floyd wins a unanimous decision, but one wire source scores it for Bonavena. I have scored this fight myself and had it a draw 4-4-2. But allowing for NY's rule of supplemental scoring in a fight that is a draw, I scored for Bonavena due to him scoring a 4th round knockdown. Anyways, that's my take on the question.

Joe had a lot of respect for Floyd Patterson, it made him angry that Muhammad Ali toyed and tortured Floyd in their 1965 battle, won by Ali, TKO 12.

I think those two knockdowns in the beginning of the fight saved Quarry from a loss. Otherwise, I see it going to Patterson.

Not only that. He also lost a very controversial decision to Maxim which I thought he won handily. The decision was booed loudly for quite some time. Here's a poster's observation after watching the fight "I saw it about 5 years on ESPN classic sports....at the time I didn't know anything about the fight and just sat and watched and watched and thought Patterson was winning easy...and than they announced the winner....was odd to be surprised by a 50 year old fight."
