This is a really good breakdown. I still think Patterson would win, but you make great points.

KOed was my vote. Slow Joe would be wide open from a lightning bolt by Patterson. He never fought anybody the likes of Floyd.

What you're saying isn't far fetched at all, I picked Louis by KO but Floyd has a legitimate chance here he has the speed, skill and power to get to Joe's far from granite chin but on the flipside Floyd's chin was even worse and while he was defensively good a prime Louis has the accuracy and timing to get to that chin regularly.

Schmeling is no Patterson. Max was in a dilemma, he'd held back to to fight with Louis, and could have knock him out again. It was a turbulent time and he did the right thing to unite America against Nazism. Schmeling, in my opinion was a much better fighter then viewed. He destroyed Louis in his first fight, which was a big thing at that time. That's, another main reason not to beat him twice. Floyd had intelligence and loads of moxie.

Joe Louis was a Boxer-Puncher Hybrid fighter. The puncher would show up for Patterson. Patterson had a lot of problems with punchers, and Louis is in a class above anything Patterson ever fought. And Patterson may very well be faster than anything Louis fought. IMO, that won't help Floyd against Joe. Louis brings too much fire power to the fight for Patterson to survive very long because of fast hands.

Better thread: "Would Joe Louis repeat what Sonny Liston did twice?"

Both primes, Pattersons odds are obv. pretty bad. Unless you think Floyd gets to his chin first and keeps him down...

I have nothing but admiration for Patterson but I can't see how he can beat a peak Louis. Floyd liked to get inside fast and use his handspeed to beat his man to the punch. If he tries this against Joe, he's going to get tied up, pushed off and nailed.
If Floyd tries to fight on the outside, Louis had two of the best feet God ever put on a Heavyweight. He never stopped making tiny adjustments to cut off an angle, open an opponent up or set up a punch.
Without doubt it's a cracking fight for about 8 rounds but Joe wins conclusively.
